The plot is mostly set in the present, although there are a few moments where we flash back to different stages in the past 70 years. She exudes warmth and wisdom, and reading this book makes you feel someone’s draped a warm overcoat across your shoulders. Despite her age Grace swims daily, either in the hideous swimming pool in her garden or wild swimming in the sea, and does yoga several times a week.

Grace is close to Alys’s own daughter, Elin, but the family rift runs deep, affecting Elin’s marriage and her relationship with her teenage daughter Beca. Like many chic lit books the characters learn all about love; but unlike a lot of books, they experience the bad parts of love as well as the good. Noticed another reviewer mentioned she disliked the way RJ often leaves the endings off words, ie, "nothin" instead of "nothing and "somethin", not "something".Told from each woman's point of view this novel criss-crosses backwards and forwards in time, stopping on key events in their lives. Ruth Jones is best known for her outstanding and award-winning television writing, most notably BBC One’s Gavin and Stacey, which she co-wrote with James Corden and in which she played the incorrigible Nessa Jenkins. We follow Elin as she struggles with her marriage, and Becca as she discovers love for the first time. I predict late success with the paperback, it has been longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction and is a superb summer read.
