About this deal

Like I said it is a lovely book I just would have liked to have seen Finn’s issues taken more seriously and dealt with properly but in such a short book I understand this is hard to do. It is very hard for most people not to take things personally, but especially for children it can be incredibly difficult and upsetting. Join our community to get personalised book suggestions, extracts straight to your inbox, 10% off RRPs, and to change children’s lives. Softly rhyming text and glowing, illustrations in this calm, gentle book celebrate an apparently insignificant domestic ritual, which means everything to this father and daughter as they make time for each other. The back matter does a wonderful job of identifying specific works and artists references in thumbnail profiles.

As the kids explore the art gallery Luna is in her element, looking at all the sculptures and paintings, but in the meantime her class mate Finn is quiet and doesn’t seem to be interested. Joe has written plays for the Polka Theatre, Soho Theatre and the Unicorn Theatre and creates dynamic poetry theatre pieces for young people that he tours nationally. On the first and last double pages are some illustrations depicting real works of art that appear within the story along with the artist’s names and year of creation which I felt was a wonderful touch! The illustrations are really what makes this book wonderful to look at and I would recommend this book for the illustrations alone! They discover all sorts of things here – dinosaurs, mummies and unexplained mysteries to monsters and magic. A combination of her obsession with picture books and the arrival of her first son led her down the path of illustration and she hasn't looked back since. However, the author has added a story of a little boy (Finn) who wasn’t very interested, was on his own, came across as unfriendly, and was then mean to Luna. Exploring with a diverse and curious group of classmates, Luna pays as much attention to a boy for class who displays atypical patterns that seem related (perhaps) to sensory and socializing issues.

So helping them to identify and understand others could help them to not take others bad behaviour personally, as they maybe going through difficulties within their own lives. Joseph Coelho is an award-winning children's author, performance poet and playwright based in London.I do really like how when Finn misbehaves, he is met with understanding and empathy by the teacher and Luna's mum, which is wonderful to see in a children’s book. However, she notices that Finn is all by himself and when she tries to involve him in the activities, he's not very nice and screws up her drawing. Beautifully, yet simply written, it is also a sympathetic look at families and the variety of shapes they come in. When she gets to school she’s excited as are the other children, all except for Finn who is looking at the floor.

In this case she is very observant, and that’s good, since she is on a trip to the art museum with an incredibly extensive collection. I love the idea that we can talk to children and they will be ready to open up and create friendships and connections with others, but in my experience that doesn’t happen right away. There are hints about Luna's parents being separated as she is dropped off at school by her dad and here mum is already there as a parent helper. Luna Loves Art’ in paperback is wider and taller than A4 in size and is filled with thick matt pages of illustrations and text. This story takes us on a wonderful journey through the Art Gallery, introducing children to a number of famous artists, encouraging them to think about what they see and express themselves, telling their own creative stories about the art. I expected this book to be about a class enjoying art and learning about artists, different periods, and various types of art and how artists create their masterpieces. series celebrates the magic of books to bring families and friends together - and sometimes save the day! It's a brilliant introduction to all sorts of art, that could be used to explore the paintings and artists further.

When Finn is mean to Luna her mum sits down with her and tells her that Finn just probably needs a friend and later the two are suddenly good friends at the end of the story even though Finn never seems to be sorry for his outburst and doesn’t apologise. It then became came clear that the story was about Finn’s issues which are suddenly resolved, a tad unrealistic, in my experience of children who behave this way, as they take time to trust others and let them in to develop a friendship.

I haven’t read any of the Luna Loves books before this one and so I don’t know what format they usually take but when I began reading this I did think it would be more focused on the main charater of Luna and the art in the story rather than her classmate Finn. A special small-format mini adventure with Luna, exclusive for World Book Day 2021, from the creators of Luna Loves Libr.
