Many of the situations that Cooper faces in the movie seem impossible to overcome, but he finds a way to survive and that's a part of what makes the film such an engaging thriller.At first glance, it might seem strange that Cooper spends the whole film trying to get home to his kids, only to voluntarily take off again at the end of the film after only being reunited with Murph for about 30 seconds. Covering all of these topics in some manner of detail, there's a great deal revealed about this ambitious project and what it took to put it together. They both realize this means Cooper will have to give up hope of ever seeing his children back on Earth, as they will likely have died of old age by the time the Endurance exits Gargantua's gravity. Among the highlights are abundant material on the filmmakers’ approach to the production, good looks at the conceptual design and construction of the film’s various spacecraft and equipment, discussion of the film’s groundbreaking depictions of astrophysical phenomena, and lots of on-set interviews and footage with the cast and crew shot during filming. But, having seen the film again on Blu-ray and now 4K, I’ve come to appreciate that there’s a lot of good here.

The best examples of science fiction filmmaking – especially hard sci-fi – manage to clear both hurdles. When Interstellar began life back in 2006, Steven Spielberg, not Nolan, was the man in the cockpit; a presence still felt in the relationship between Cooper and Murph. It may look almost unrecognizable, but the massive cylindrical space station where Cooper finds himself at the end of Interstellar is a setting we've seen many times. The most obvious one being, how can the humans of the future save the humans of the past, if the humans of the future can't even exist without the humans of the past surviving?Why doesn’t the radiation from the wormhole and the black hole’s accretion disc fry the astronauts before they ever get close? Some of the talking heads seen at the start of the film are real-life accounts from that period, taken from the documentary The Dust Bowl by Ken Burns. You’d think after travelling through a black hole and being separated for decades, he’d want a bit of a catch-up with his daughter? Cooper’s tortured face as he watches his family unspool through 20 years of unanswered video missives is agony, raw and unadorned. Given that the crew knows time-dilation is going to be a problem there, and that time is critical back on Earth, why not send a probe down to check out Miller’s planet first?
