About this deal

I feel like I never really got to know Debbie Harry at all, having just read an entire book about Debbie Harry, supposedly written by Debbie Harry.

There is certainly more that I want to know--more details about Parallel Lines and Eat to the Beat, Blondie's two best albums (in my opinion) from the Early Era; more details about the transition from Eat to the Beat to AutoAmerican, which seems drastic even now, although it was probably something completely normal in the evolution of the band; more of her thoughts on the reaction to KooKoo, which even now seems mixed, despite it being something of a quirky, musical milestone in pop history. He claims the inspiration was an acupuncturist friend, and that “She [Harry] was very pleased but, I think some people thought it was like voodoo, when you stick needles into a doll and make magic, but that’s not what I meant by it. The scope of Debbie Harry’s impact on our culture has been matched only by her reticence to reveal her rich inner life – until now.

She’s been knocking around the city for almost five years, always on the sidelines, when she decides to move back to New Jersey. All of that said, Debbie Harry is an icon, and although I didn’t get much of a feel for who she is, deep down, I still love her music and was glad I had the chance to learn a bit more about her history. She graduated from Centenary College in Hackettstown, New Jersey, with an Associate of Arts degree in 1965. John Waters, who cast Harry in Hairspray, once said she turned her back and Madonna stole her career.I really wanted something juicy with all kinds of crazy punk 70's NYC shit and this was a major let down. After college she worked various jobs—as a dancer, a Playboy Bunny, and a secretary (including at the BBC in New York)—before her breakthrough in the music industry. After Blondie split up in 1982, Harry's solo output slowed down as she cared for ailing partner Chris Stein.

After a year-long hiatus, Blondie regrouped and released their sixth studio album, The Hunter (1982).Harry appears on the 2001 Bill Ware album Vibes 4 singing the track "Me and You" as well as on former Police guitarist Andy Summers's album Peggy's Blue Skylight on the track "Weird Nightmare". This isn’t a question, but in 1978 or 1979 I was a very closeted trans kid watching Blondie on Top of the Pops with my friends. Voted Best-Looking Girl in her high school, she was sexually precocious and unashamed of it in an era where slut-shaming was the norm. She learns how to be photographed and wonders whether if it’s true that photos steal a part of your soul – for if so she wouldn’t have a soul left.

In 2015, Blondie members Debbie Harry and Chris Stein made a guest appearance alongside The Gregory Brothers in an episode of Songify the News, and they collaborated again to parody the United States presidential election debates, 2016. None of those intimacies are here and I’m wondering if perhaps Debbie was not really all that interested in giving us a prolonged peek behind the curtain, which leads me to believe that she may have been better off going with an authorized biography instead.Harry's memoir is divided into many chapters; each read like transcribed interviews, because they are. And of course she's under no obligation to do so, but I do wish that this rock n' roll memoir had, y'know, rocked a little bit more. She’d catch a ride with a girlfriend and the two would cruise a strip known as Cunt Alley, then go dancing. Harry contributed to Fall Out Boy's 2008 album Folie à Deux, singing on the chorus of the album's closer "West Coast Smoker".
