We would love to recommend a HomeKit-specific smart doorbell, but we’re not sold on any of the models we’ve tested, including the Aqara Smart Video Doorbell G4, the Logitech Circle View Wired Doorbell, the Netatmo Smart Video Doorbell, or the Wemo Smart Video Doorbell. Downsides to this option include lower quality audio and video, which might be harder for older people to interact with, and the need to replace and charge batteries frequently – not great for the more forgetful. But it has a nice design, all black except for a steel grey pad where the button is, and its curved edges provide a different look than the other HomeKit doorbells.
As with other doorbells, a notification is sent to a paired smartphone when motion is sensed, or the doorbell is pressed. In terms of image quality and features, the Nest Doorbell (wired) is still up there with the best but given the complications over subscriptions, it isn’t quite the slam-dunk recommendation it once was. With certain video doorbells, there’s even smart lock integration so your doorbell can effectively let someone into your home once you give them the green light from your smartphone.It has an expansive field of view that covers your entire doorstep, delivers sharp video, and has a microSD card slot for local storage (meaning you don't have to pay for a cloud subscription). We wish it worked with more third-party smart devices, but we like that it supports Alexa and Google Assistant voice controls, bundles free cloud storage, and captures a 180-degree field of view. To that end, Eufy provides you with a mounting bracket that holds the doorbell camera, plus a mounting wedge in case you need to angle the camera. The Eufy Doorbell Camera has solid battery life, but it eventually needs to be recharged, and when you have to bring it inside, you're left defenseless outside.
Image quality is excellent at 2,560 x 1,920 in resolution and we found that notifications came through on our phone almost instantaneously, something older Ring doorbells can struggle with. It comes at an additional cost compared to the standard Ring doorbell, but that extra money gets you a camera capable of capturing 1536p footage with a wide 150-degree field of view, as well as HDR processing and colour night view.Currently, features found on other doorbells missing from HomeKit include automated quick replies, local storage of video, and the option to change the digital doorbell chime to a different tone or holiday theme. Image quality is good, notifications are delivered in a speedy manner, and it’s very easy to install and operate. I set one that turned on my hallway light when motion was detected, and the light turned on constantly.
