About this deal

For all that we’ve come to love and appreciate about Marilyn now, she did have a reputation for chronic lateness and an almost pathological inability to remember dialogue, sometimes requiring upwards of 50 takes for a single line. The novella is one of Capote’s most popular works and has been adapted as a musical, a play, and most famously as an Academy Award-winning film in 1961 starring Audrey Hepburn.

Indeed, the war is constantly in the background of the book, as the characters make fleeting references to it. It may be that they’re caught between a rock and a hard place: too similar to the movie and they can’t live up to the light-touch charisma and now ossified iconography of Hepburn; too like the book, and they lose the expected, populist fantasy, making the show a tougher sell. She took her dreams of society from Truman’s own mother, her existential anxieties from Capote himself, but her personality, which seemed so intimately hers, would come from the tight-knit coterie of Manhattan divas Truman so flagrantly adored,” he wrote. The reason he was sent there was caused less by the divorce and more by the fact that his mother saw him as a burden. One went: Don’t wanna sleep, Don’t wanna die, Just wanna go a-travelin’ through the pastures of the sky; and this one seemed to gratify her the most, for often she continued it long after her hair had dried, after the sun had gone and there were lighted windows in the dusk.Capote, an expert at holding grudges, vowed to never associate himself with Harper’s again, and briefly alleged that Breakfast at Tiffany’s would never see the light of day. The narrator identifies the most boisterous and confident person in the room as Rusty Trawler, who gregariously makes martinis while the narrator stands by the wall and pretends to read the books on Holly’s shelves. She talked of her own, too; but it was elusive, nameless, placeless, an impressionistic recital, though the impression received was contrary to what one expected, for she gave an almost voluptuous account of swimming and summer, Christmas trees, pretty cousins and parties: in short, happy in a way that she was not, and never, certainly, the background of a child who had run away. He finally meets her properly when she appears outside his window and asks to be let in, claiming that a drunk man is annoying her.

It’s just that she had no sense of time, nor conscience that that three hundred people had been waiting hours for her. Decades before The Mary Tyler Moore Show or Sex and the City, Holly Golightly slipped on her iconic little black dress with her best diamonds and singlehandedly proved that women could have it all. Apparently, Holly had emerged on horseback with two exhausted men and asked for shelter in the sculptor’s village. Later, the narrator learns that a Texan man named Doc Golightly took Holly and her brother, Fred, in years ago after catching them stealing. Although Holly Golightly is an independent young woman who makes her own way in the world and refuses to let others interfere with her individuality, she also appreciates the value of human connection.

But if Miss Golightly remained unconscious of my existence, except as a doorbell convenience, I became, through the summer, rather an authority on hers. Since Truman Capote liked making up stories so much, it’s most likely that his precious Holly was always meant to be an enigma: of his imagination, and of our hearts. For instance, Holly frequently talks about what she’s going to do after the war ends, making plans to reunite with her brother, Fred, who is serving in the army.

And when people further reinvent Breakfast at Tiffany’s – which keeps happening on stage – it’s her shoes young starlets are required to fill.

The narrator receives only one telegram from Holly saying that she’s living in Buenos Aires and will send him a permanent address when she has one, though she never does. Holly claims that if she could find a place in real life that made her feel like this, she would settle down immediately.

As Holly sleeps, José tells the narrator that Holly isn’t upset about Rusty, but because she received a telegram from Doc saying that Fred was killed in the war. Critics aren’t invited for breakfast till the show lands in the West End, but it’ll be interesting to see if this latest Holly is simply a fashionable clothes horse, a placeholder for a romanticised view of feminine glamour, or if she’ll prove “top banana in the shock department” – and actually find the grit at the heart of this pearl. Several myths surrounding the actress not getting cast have continued to circulate, with the general consensus being that Marilyn was already considered to be a high-maintenance diva and too much of a liability, so Paramount refused to even consider her. I strongly recommend this book to all those who like dramas and who love analyzing the main characters. Holly demonstrates that although she is not the most beautiful girl, she is still able to attract people to her by using that interior charm created by her cheered temper. She then tells the narrator that fame would be too much for her at the moment—after all, she’s not yet attached to her own life. Still, she says that she was only thinking of becoming an actress because she didn’t know what else to do. Ordinarily, you’d worry for a young star stepping straight into a much-beloved, genuinely iconic role – but somehow, with Holly Golightly, it’s considered just fine. One night, she climbs up the fire escape and through the narrator’s window because she’s brought home a drunk man whom she wants to avoid.
