The only gripe I have with the book is the pace of the ending, though that is likely due to the fact that the book wasn't originally intended to be an ancient cultivation setting in the first place and the author had to make some last minute changes. It isn't enough for me to remove a star, because frankly, Mo Xi and Gu Mang deserved that ending, and I think it's amazing that Meatbun was able to change the setting and make it fit the way that she did. I didn’t really like the last ten chapters. I was so ready for the one final battle and then the conclusion and happy ending but NOPE. We got launched into another twisty little plot that ended with a deus ex machina, and idk. It just felt kind of unnecessary? Or maybe I’m just not able to appreciate it since I’m still struggling with Chinese. Oh well. The author did a fantastic job of foreshadowing and weaving a very cohesive story that tied up all loose ends. There were a lot of things early on that I didn't think twice about that ended up getting explained in more context near the end. For example, the mysterious owner of Gu Mang's precious brocade bag with the fire character on it, or how Li Qingqian's heart obsession was dissolved with a couple sentences from Jiang Fuli's wife along with a peak at her face. I was curious about these things but forgot about them as the story progressed, so it was such a pleasant surprise to see them incorporated neatly into the overall picture. I absolutely loved this book - the way the characters are depicted, the plot, and the word building are all immaculate. His personality becomes a lot colder when this idealism shatters, leading to his disillusionment and his defection.
