About this deal

Shithead is a beating game in which the players try to avoid being the last to get rid of all their cards. The loser typically suffers some forfeit such as having to make the tea, or at least has the job of shuffling and dealing the next hand.

A joker can be played on anything and next player misses a turn. If there are just two players in the game this means that the player of the joker immediately plays another card of any value. In games of more than two players the joker is treated in one of three ways: as glass (like a 7) or with a value of 7, or with a value of 2. To avoid arguments decide before starting which of these variations is being played. Once you have gotten rid of all your cards- cards in hand and on the table- you have avoided losing the game. You drop out of the game. The game continues until all but one player has dropped out- that player is the loser or the shithead. This player must either deal the next hand or“make tea,” which can be anything that benefits the comfort or well-being of the group. VARIATIONS Jokers If they cannot match or beat the previously played card with their face up cards, they must take the pile as usual. They cannot play any face up cards again until their hand is empty. Deal each player three cards face down (set these side by side for each player). Players DO NOT look at these cards. Jokers. Two Jokers are added as special cards that reverse the direction of play. They also allow six people to play. [2]

Overview

Players select which three cards out of the six they want in hand and on the table. Play for Winner There are three downwards facing cards and three upwards facing cards on the table. You cannot play them until your hand is finished. You cannot look at a downward facing card before playing it. Included in the box for this game is an attractive poo head hat, with toilet-themed colours of brown and yellow. It's covered in Velcro patches and as well as having the words 'POO HEAD' stamped on it three times for maximum humiliation, it also has different numbers so that you can get different scores depending on the accuracy of your throws. The hat is elasticated at the edges to fit a variety of different head sizes and can be tied under the chin with a brown ribbon. Three comfortably palm sized fabric poo projectiles are also included. Before play begins, players may exchange any cards in their hand with any of their own face up cards (the idea here is to trade better cards from your hand with lesser cards from the table).

A seven can be played on anything and is "glass", meaning that the next player must play a card which could legally have been played on the card before the seven. For example, if a 7 is played on an Ace, the next player must beat an Ace. If a 7 is played to the empty table (nothing under it) it has the value of 7. The first person to play a 10 or complete a four of a kind, clearing away the pile, is known as the "flush" person, and has to clear away the pile each time this happens in future. The first player is the player who receives a three face-up. If there is not a 3 face-up, the first player to declare they have a three in hand is the first player. If there are no 3s dealt, repeat with four (and so on). Play continues this way until a player cannot match or beat the rank of the previously played card(s). When this happens, they must add the pile to their hand. As players run out of cards they continue playing until only one player has cards left. This player is known as the "smeg head".

Quartets. A quartet is a set of four cards of equal rank e.g. 5 ♦ 5 ♣ 5 ♥ 5 ♠ or 8 ♥ 8 ♦ 8 ♠ 8 ♣. If a player is able to play a quartet, the wastepile is set aside as if a ten had been played. [4] In addition, the last player to complete a quartet on the top of the wastepile by playing its fourth card also removes the wastepile. Either way, the same player may then play another card or set. [1] The first player is the person who receives the first 3 dealt face-up. If no 3 is face-up, the first person to call a three in a hand is the first player. If there is no 3 dealt to a hand, then the same procedure is followed for the first 4, and so on, if need be. These are the rules that I have always used playing Shithead. There are many variations possible, so this When a seven is played, the next play must be lower than or equal to seven, or an eight (see below), or a ten (tens can be played at any time). Twisted Shithead is an elaborate variation in which nearly all the cards have special effects. It was created by Galbraith/Lewis/Constance/Mabely (1993); the description is by Paul JaYmes (1997).

A ten can be played on anything except an eight and causes the pile to be cleared as usual. The player of the 10 plays again to the empty table. Once you have played all cards in hand and all your face-up cards, play your face-down cards blindly. On your turn, flip a face-down card onto the discard. If the card is playable, as in it is equal or higher rank than the previous card played, your turn is over and play passes on. If the card is not playable, after placing it on the discard you collect the pile, including your face-down card. The next discard is started by the player to your left. You must play all the cards in hand before flipping your next face-down card. Empty Hand Sean Daly, describes a version of the game Karma, from Radford, Virginia, USA. The differences are as follows:

Are you sure you want to concede the game?

If someone completes a set of four cards of the same rank on top of the discard pile (either by playing all four cards at once or by equalling the previous play), the whole pile is removed from play, and the same player who completed the four of a kind takes another turn, playing any card or set of equal cards to start a new discard pile. The Endgame The game is occasionally played to find a winner rather than a loser. In that case, the winner is the first player who manages to get rid of all their hand and table cards. Once a player has no hand and no face up cards left, they must play from their face down cards. Since players do not know what these cards are, they are flipped over when played, using the same card rules. If the card matches or beats the previously played card, play continues. If not, the player must add the pile to their hand and cannot play face down cards again until their hand is empty.

Reverse Shithead is a variation contributed by Andrew Duthie, which includes a reverse phase where beating the previous player's card is compulsory but disadvantageous. As soon as the pile has four-of-a-kind on top (either from a player playing four-of-a-kind or from a player completing four-of-a-kind), the pile is "burned" (removed from the game permanently by setting the cards off to the side).
