Make sure everyone is wearing clothes and shoes ready to get very muddy, even ‘spectators’ as even people intending to stay on the sidelines will get super muddy too 🙂 Imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, 'This is an interesting world I find myself in, an interesting hole I find myself in, fits me rather neatly, doesn't it? In fact, it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!' This is such a powerful idea that as the sun rises in the sky and the air heats up and as, gradually, the puddle gets smaller and smaller, it's still frantically hanging on to the notion that everything's going to be all right, because this World was meant to have him in it, was built to have him in it; so the moment he disappears catches him rather by surprise.

This is a great way to make sure that children don’t end up with anything unsuitable in their mud pie play. It also adds another level to the game, and plenty more opportunities for learning. When puddling, many butterflies and moths pump fluid through the digestive tract and release fluid from their anus. In some, such as the male notodontid Gluphisia crenata, this is released in forced anal jets at 3 second intervals. Fluid of up to 600 times the body mass may pass through and males have a much longer ileum (anterior hindgut) than non-puddling females. [14]

Plenty of scientific principles can be demonstrated whilst mud pie making but mixing in a few safe household ingredients can make it even more fun. Wear the right gear! Being outdoors can be miserable if you aren’t well prepared with changes of clothes, waterproof layers and good sustenance. Eleanor Astbury, Nature Nest Childcare Best day playing with mud: it started with a Bake Off challenge! Kids ‘grouped’ themselves (some happily switching during the activity!), had a simple recipe instruction to include x number of this or that (included items we had learned about, and I added extra resources hidden around to find!). The competition extended into role play by the children with restaurant dens, water suppliers, delivery drivers and guards(?), with obstacles put in place to make delivery journeys longer and more exciting! There were plenty of very soggy bottoms all round by the end!Puddle Of Mudd - About A Girl (Nirvana Cover) [LIVE @ SiriusXM]". YouTube.com. SiriusXM. Archived from the original on December 11, 2021. Best evidence: Sir David Attenborough and forest school leaders across the globe agree – if children enjoy and feel CONNECTED to a space they will CARE about it too. Males seem to benefit from the sodium uptake through mud-puddling behaviour with an increase in reproductive success. The collected sodium and amino acids are often transferred to the female with the spermatophore during mating as a nuptial gift. This nutrition also enhances the survival rate of the eggs. [11] [12] [13] Medieval legend spoke of one man who was desperate to find building materials for his house, so he stole cobblestones from the road surface. The remaining hole filled with water and a horseman who later walked through the 'puddle' found himself drowning. [ citation needed] A similar legend, of a young boy drowning in a puddle that formed in a pothole in a major street in the early years of Seattle, Washington, is told as part of the Seattle Underground Tour. Due to the notoriety surrounding how the band was signed with Durst, the band is often asked regarding their relationship with him. Scantlin criticized Durst in an interview in 2004 with Canada's Chart magazine:

Why and How This Mud Puddle Moves 20 Feet Per Year

Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) are diverse in their strategies to gather liquid nutrients. Typically, mud-puddling behaviour takes place on wet soil. But even sweat on human skin may be attractive to butterflies such as species of Halpe. [5] [6] More unusual sources include blood and tears. Again, similar behaviour is not limited to the Lepidoptera, and for example, the various species of bees commonly called sweat bees are attracted to various kinds of sweat and tears, including that of humans, and other bee species have been recorded as doing so to various degrees. This article is about the liquid phenomenon. For other uses, see Puddle (disambiguation). Reflections in a forest puddleSmall wildlife, such as birds and insects, can use puddles as a source of essential moisture or for bathing. Raised constructed puddles, bird baths, are a part of domestic and wildlife gardens as a garden ornament and "micro-habitat" restoration. Swallows use the damp loam which gathers in puddles as a form of cement to help to build their nests. Many butterfly species and some other insects, but particularly male butterflies, need puddles for nutrients they can contain, such as salts and amino acids. In a behaviour known as puddling they seek out the damp mud that can be found around the edge of the puddles. [2]
