The information for Fashion Plate Collection was researched and prepared by the UW Libraries Special Collections and Cataloging staff in 2002. Not all the plates from the collection were included in this database: the database consists of 417 digital images chosen from a larger group of fashion plates. The images were scanned in color using a Microtek Scanmaker 9600L and saved in .jpg format. Some manipulation of the images was done to present the clearest possible digital image. The scanned images were then linked with descriptive data using the UW Content program. The original collection resides in the UW Libraries Special Collections Division as the Fashion Plate Collection. As the fashion for military touches persisted, many Pelisses and Spencers were covered in decorative braids, tassels, frogging, and cords, as a result, their wearers looked like members of the Hussars. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Tomy revived the concept as a toy marketed simply as Fashion Plates. [13] [14] [15] Fashion plates v. costume plates [ edit ] As technology improved, speed of communication and transportation increased, thus allowing consumers access to foreign fashions, accessories and hairstyles. The introduction of an educated middle class also allowed for a more fashion-conscious population that became devoted to fashion plate publications. Until the 1820s, fashion plate engravings were made on copper printing plates, which limited the number of prints that could be taken due to the softness of the metal. [6] Fashion plate, Godey's Lady's Book, January 1837Suffrage and other banners represent London’s role as a centre for the fashion and clothing industry, from education through to design, production, promotion, retail and wear. British women looked to Paris for the lead in fashion, and from the late 18th century French plates were often copied for British magazines. But from the 1830s, French engravings were themselves sent over for inclusion in high-class English periodicals. It was common practice for less accomplished engravers to then copy them for cheaper magazines, so the same dress was often seen recurring in subsequent months as it worked its way down the social scale and further away from Paris. By the 1860s and 70s nearly every English magazine imported its plates from France, and the collection contains numerous French prints that were reissued in England. Fashion-plate’ is related to a series of ‘Cosmetic Studies’ of the same title made in 1969, in which Hamilton put together fragments of photographs of models from fashion magazines. With a full-length painting on this subject in mind, three preliminary studies were made, then, By 1820 the dress had lost all classical form and took on a pure Gothic line which lasted until Queen Victoria's accession. Variations in Fashion Between France and England 1808-1814 One of her subsequent accomplishments, however, was the completion of a book entitled "History of Costume", a college textbook describing the evolution of fashion from 3000 B.C. to 1900. Published in 1965, it contains detailed descriptions of historical and cultural fashion along with renditions of small-scale garment patterns that she meticulously drafted from various museum collections. To research her book, she spent two years avidly collecting illustrations: photographs, postcards, art prints, and fashion plates. Her book is still considered today a foremost resource in the study of costume history. It reflects her teaching philosophy that the study of original artifacts is of essential importance in the understanding of good design.

Periodicals targeted to both wealthy women and middle class women were being produced, which led to ladies’ magazines, and therefore fashion plates, being a regular commodity for households of varying social classes. It is important to remember, however, that this accessibility didn't mean that women could buy new clothes with every issue. Much like today with magazines like Vogue and Elle, women can read about the latest styles, but unless they have the financial means, they aren't buying new clothes every month. The Metropolitan Museum of Art. “Women 1840, Plate 100.” Gift of Woodman Thompson. https://libmma.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p15324coll12/id/1220 The Redingote was worn from 1818 onwards initially indoors in cold weather, worn open whilst revealing the dress beneath. Its name derives from the 18 th century version of a riding coat.
