About this deal

The XMAX V3 Pro Vaporizer is an upgraded version of the popular and successful XMAX V2 Pro. The V2 Pro sat at the top of our “best cheap vaporizer” section in our best dry herb vaporizer guide for the better part of 5 years, and we now have an upgraded version featuring hybrid on-demand heating, a replaceable battery system, and USB-C charging. As mentioned above, the Starry has a ceramic heating oven, with 0.3-gram capacity. The top of the oven is an oval-shaped funnel which makes it easy to slide dry herbs into the chamber. Really the only downside with the overall design is the fact that the mouthpiece and upper lid do get pretty hot with prolonged use. I’m talking long sessions at high temps but overall it’s not bad. XMAX Starry Accessories Each I've bought has lasted a solid 1-2 years before having any issues, and the patient will find those issues manageable for months longer. The hinge tends to get a bit loose (after a year) and makes maintaining a connection through the battery more difficult. Pressing on the base of the vape and holding it is usually enough to fix initial startup problems, and once the hinge begins acting up it behaves best over 330 degrees. I've found it to be well worth the price, with easily handled problems later in its life if you want to hold off on a replacement. We love swappable batteries because not only can you keep the vapor flowing with a spare, but you don’t end up with a new paper weight if you happen to have a battery fail a year or two down the road.

Next, remove the zirconia screen from the mouthpiece and place it into a small dish with ISO. Let it sit for a bit, and then clean it with warm water and paper towels. The Starry’s controls are simple and make sense with three buttons to turn it on/off, adjust temperature control, session timer and Celsius/Fahrenheit OLED display. Turning it on is as simple as holding the power button in for three seconds. Plus, the Starry will buzz gently to let you know when it reaches vaping temperature. Easy to load. Cool mouthpiece. The XMax Starry is well made and offers great value considering its price. It offers features usually seen in more expensive vaporizers such as aluminum shell, precise temperature control, LCD screen, and replaceable battery. Overall vapor quality is about average for a conduction portable vaporizer in this price range, and it’s a close match to the POTV One ( read review) but it’s not quite as good as the Davinci IQC ( read review), which features a bottom-mounted chamber and longer vapor path, which helps cool vapor quite a bit more. The lid and mouthpiece tend to get hot with prolonged use. When vaping a long session you can use your hand or fingers to help dissipate the heat from the unit before a draw. Just place your fingers over the mouthpiece when you’re waiting for the next draw and it will cool it down.

Draw Resistance: The draw resistance is about average when clean but goes up when dirty. The biggest contributor to the draw resistance is the mouthpiece/screen. It tends to clog up after multiple sessions so it’s important to brush out the chamber and mouthpiece after every session. I also try not to leave herbs in the chamber after a session. When possible I Immediately dump the bowl to help keep down on cleaning. The “POTV” XMAX Starry 4 version features an upgraded 18650 with a 3200mah capacity versus a 2550mah in the original Topgreen model. Other than that, the only thing different is the POTV logo, and while I have both units, most of the photos in this Starry 4 review will be with the POTV version. I also recommend temp-stepping your sessions. Temp Stepping is when you start the session at a certain temperature, say 360F, then as the session goes on and you take a couple of draws, increase the temp by 10-20 degrees and take a few more draws. Continue this method until the vapor is wispy and loses flavor. The finished flower will look brown to dark brown in color. Before you use your Starry for the first time, make sure to give it a full charge. This could takes as long as four hours the first time, with shorter charge times after that. We recommend plugging the USB cable into your phone’s wall outlet adapter for a faster charge. The battery will charge faster with an external charger, if you have one. Controls The XMAX V3 Pro features a full temperature spectrum ranging from 222F – 428F (100C – 220C) and heats up in about 15 seconds, depending on your temp and battery life. So the V3 Pro is not a full “on-demand” convection vaporizer like it claims to be, but it’s darn close.

We are a small group of avid Vapers that came together to guide users when buying a new vaporizer and reduce the guesses you have to make when searching for the best vaporizer for your needs. To turn on the Starry, hold the power button for three seconds. The two smaller buttons adjust the temperature up and down, and it will immediately start heating up to the last temperature. The coffee cup icon will blink while it heats up, and turns solid when it’s time to vape. Not too long ago, all full temp spectrum was not industry standard, and cheaper devices like this one only came with a handful of temp options. Nowadays, a full temp spectrum is standard, and most portable vaporizers will feature a wide range of temperature options. The Starry 4 added roughly 20 grams of weight (Roughly 138g vs 122g on the previous Starry 3 model). The Session Timer can be set to 4 or 6 minutes. By default, it’s set to 4 minutes. Hold the power button and top temp button simultaneously for two seconds to change it. You can also restart the session when the timer ends.

By now you should be able to tell that I really like the Starry. In general, I’m only this impressed with one or two new vapes or manufacturers a year, and this is the first 2017 release to really do it for me. The Starry vaporizer is about the same size as the Pax 2. Maybe a smidgen wider but very close. The Starry weighs roughly 120 grams with the battery in which is about 30 grams more than the Pax 2. You can now remove the remaining silicone housing and the mouthpiece itself from the top. Clean the silicone housing with warm soapy water and place the mouthpiece and remaining zirconia housing into the ISO dish. I would imagine XMAX suggests cleaning it all with ISO, but I’m not a fan of using ISO on any silicone. If you are using the XMAX V3 Pro WPA (Water Pipe Adapter) or the XMAX V3 Pro Glass Mouthpiece (above), you can remove the glass for the silicone housing and place it into Isopropyl Alcohol. Rinse the silicone housing with soap and water. Rinse everything off and let dry completely before use.

You can change temperatures via the two smaller buttons below the power button. There’s no temp indicator as to which is + or -, but I think you can figure out which one increases temp and decreases it. The full temp range runs from 212-428F (100-220C), and I recommend starting around 370ish, temp stepping with each draw. When the V3 Pro is in on-demand mode, you can power it on, and it will remain on standby until you press and hold down the power button. On-Demand Mode requires you to press the power button for the entirety of the draw. You can hold down the power button for 30 seconds in on-demand mode, and the device will vibrate three times when you initially reach temp. After 30 seconds, the device will stop heating, but you can release the power button and press it again to start the cycle over. Improved the battery door mechanism. Much easier to open and close, especially for people with dexterity issues.Start by placing a small amount of ISO on a Q-tip and swab out the chamber. Keeping the unit upside down is important in case the ISO drips, then it drips out of the chamber instead of into the inside of the unit. Again, only a small amount is needed, especially when the unit is warm.
