About this deal

Applying weed killers that contain herbicides isn’t as easy as it initially seems, and many people struggle with commercial weed control for this very reason. Also, similarly to phosphorous, it helps plants grow a strong, extensive root system – very important for helping grass to endure the harsh conditions of winter. This is perfect as it only takes a day to work which means you can get on with removing the moss early. However, if you are using the same product a second time (after raking) you are best to give a 4 week gap between applications. Together, these result in a product that can be used several times over autumn and winter to prepare grass in different ways for spring. The fertiliser contains seaweed which is a natural source of phosphorous and known to assist with soil aeration – improving drainage and avoiding problems associated with damp soil. In turn this improves the strength of roots, and the health of grass.

Ideally, you want at least a month of active grass growth after applying the fertiliser, before the very cold temperatures hit. One thing to note: if there’s no rain forecast, you’ll need to make sure to fully water in the fertiliser yourself. It takes a while, and a fair amount of water, for the granules to dissolve. Slow grass growth isn’t a bad thing in the right conditions. A dense healthy lawn fed and cut appropriately will be sufficiently dense so as to prevent much moss growth. Remember, moss grows primarily where the grass is weak or thin so a dense lawn is the best defence. To achieve this you need to: White clover in particular is a sign of low nitrogen levels in the soil, and growing it will correct this imbalance. If you see it in your veg patch, in particular, let it be! Just don't let it take over your vegetable plants – make sure their roots still have space to grow. Weed killer FAQs Does weed killer kill grass? Review:"Bought on recommendation from a groundskeeper. Works just as described, patience is required thought as it doesn't work overnight. Slowly killed all the weeds including daisies, buttercups, clover and broadleaf weeds (the latter took a lot longer)." Tester - A. Patel.

Our recommendation for application is to start applying at 35g per sqm in mid-September and to continue this treatment every 6 to 8 weeks while the weather is colder. However, too much phosphorous in soil can also be problematic. Phosphorous can build up in the soil, and excessive amounts reduce a plant’s ability to take other vital nutrients from the soil. This is one of the reasons why it’s important not to overdo it on the phosphorous front. Both the season and the changing weather conditions , day-by-day, impact weed killers effectiveness. Liz Potter, editor of Garden Answers, says, "We like to be organic as much as possible on Garden Answers – if you think about it, a weed is often just a misunderstood wildflower growing in the wrong place, and even dandelions can be an important source of nectar for early bees on the wing. Some at-home moss killer formulas are prone to burning your lawn and leaving unattractive scarring and discolouring. Our professional team members will apply the specialised iron sulphate lawn moss killer evenly to the affected areas, making sure to avoid burning your grass.

Fall is the second-best season because weed killers thrive on the sudden change in weather. Spraying weed killer in October means that weeds will struggle to survive the winter. Systemic weed killers: These strong weed killers work by being absorbed by the foliage and travelling through the weed to the root system. They stop the weed from growing as well as preventing its ability to produce food from sunlight. A treatment cycle for weeds is how often you need to use weed killer for the weed to be effectively exterminated. Treatment cycles can be broken down into pre-emergent and post-emergent stages . During the winter months, your lawn can look very different to the rest of the year. If your lawn is looking a little bedraggled and you’re not sure which treatments are best suited, why not get a FREE lawn survey from Lawn & Weed Expert? Consider applying a weed killer after mowing. You should wait for 2 days if you intend to apply a liquid herbicide. After the application, do not mow for the next 3 days;Remove as much moss as possible then apply any of the moss products mentioned. Wait the required period, rake out the now dead moss that remains, over seed and use a spring fertiliser once the seed has germinated. A fast-paced gripping read with plenty of twists and turns . This series just gets better and better! NetGalley reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐ This has the additional benefit of killing and desiccating some moss making iteasier to remove. This does increase the time taken from start to finish as follows: When the overnight temperature range is in the low 70’s to 60’s degrees Fahrenheit, it’s safest to use a herbicide. Temperatures could be in the mid-80s F throughout the day. Cold climate

A high nitrogen content is less important for winter fertiliser. However, grass still requires some nitrogen for promoting normal functions and it is not always present in the soil in high amounts – this is why most winter fertilisers still contain a reasonable amount of nitrogen. If you’re hoping to find a fertiliser that will be useful year-round, you will want a slightly higher ratio of nitrogen compared to if you’re using a separate fertiliser for winter and spring (recommended). Plant tissues are damaged by non-systemic herbicides, which can be spread at any time of day. Pre-emergent herbicides may be used at any time of day and are still effective. This herbicide works by forming a chemical membrane in the topsoil that keeps weeds out.

DI James Walker and his team return in The Winter Killer, third in this excellent police procedural series by talented author Alex Pine. DC Jessica Abbott and her fiancé Sean are attending the glamorous New Year’s Eve wedding of Libby Elliott and Greg Murphy, owner of the luxury lakefront hotel where the wedding takes place. When Rachel, Libby’s sister and maid of honor, disappears during the the reception, a search begins. DC Abbott is in charge, joined by DI Walker when clues leading to a grim discovery are found. Rachel has drowned in the lake after receiving a head injury. Abbott and Walker must deal with the grieving family, over-served wedding guests, and the bleak and snowy Cumbrian winter. Herbicides in weed killers require absorption from the soil to activate. This absorption can only take place if the soil is moist from the rain. Spring being a typically rainy season ensures that the soil is wet enough to soak up the herbicide, which is then taken up by the plant root. The RHS recommend over the use of a Autumn & Winter fertiliser on your lawn and plants over the winter months as a protective measure for the winter weather and get them off to a great start in the spring. Spray drift, which occurs when herbicide spreads to other parts of the yard during windy weather and destroys unwanted plants, must be avoided. We can’t spray because the wind is too high, so we have to wait for it to die down, which typically occurs in the morning and evening. Very hot or cold environments will not work since liquid solutions disappear before applying in high temperatures and freeze in extremely cold temperatures. Types of different weed killers: how to apply them at the proper time?

Promoting biodiversity in your garden also comes down to planting a selection of flowers in your garden, rather than a handful of species. Think variety, flowers that bloom at different times of the year, and will attract different bugs and wildlife. Read more popular articles Spraying weed killer on plants with dew on them is futile since the spray would turn too diluted to be useful. If the earth is frozen or shrouded with snow, harsh winters are often useless. Whether there isn’t any snow and the field isn’t frozen, the perfect moment is in the middle of the day while the sun is shining. Moderate climateWeeds may only be killed if they are actively rising. This suggests that the project would begin in April and end in late September/early October. Overall, it’s one of the best winter lawn fertilisers to buy on a budget. You get a generous amount of product for the price, and it will be sufficient to cover the majority of small/medium gardens. When Rachel left the wedding breakfast before her speech, newly-wed Libby was furious. But as the night went on with no sign of her maid-of-honour, Libby started to realise something was very, very wrong…
