I made the book last me 3 days. I wanted to find out what happened to Cadi but also didn’t want it to end. The two face a shared struggle as they attempt to try and simply survive. Their lot is one of poverty, and it grinds the energy out of the. It is a very tough life and even though the two girls have each other, even they know that they will not be able to lean on the other one forever and make it through on that shared support alone. The story does deal with some dramatic and dark themes, such as domestic abuse, poverty, the dangers of mining and the Liverpool Blitz. However, the narration is never gritty or too intense, so if that’s your thing this probably isn’t the book for you. This port came under constant fire during the war and is a neat metaphor for the bombshells dropping around them as they try to make their way in a place which could swallow their homestead many times over. On reaching Liverpool, they soon realise that they are too young to join the services, so rather than admit defeat and go home, they scour Liverpool looking for a job.

Their lives in Liverpool could not be more different that where they have run from, they meet Maria, single handedly running a pub, and this gives them hope that without a man around, they can still stand on their feet. Cadi and Poppy may have a Rhos sensibility, but opening their eyes to the outside world gives them choices-will they remain the girls who want to be remembered for competing at the Rose Queen festival, or do they want to become women of the world? I wholeheartedly recommend this stunner of a war time romance and the search for a meaningful life. Just loved it. And this one certainly filled this criteria and was a really good read. Such a good read that as I read before bed I had some very late nights. The setting is Liverpool in England and the year is 1905. The month is December, and it is the dead of winter. Dawn is breaking on a morning that is blustery with wind and raw, and this is the time when a newborn baby is placed at an orphanage’s front door. This baby girl has been abandoned but placed at the steps where she can be hopefully taken in and cared for.She has enjoyed writing her Katie Flynn books and has said that writing them was ‘a delight’. Writing under this pen name has been very fulfilling for the author and the titles that were published under this pseudonym have ended up selling quite a few copies and doing very well.

However, if you want a sentimental read full of nostalgia and endearing characters, who are ever optimistic despite adversity, and females who are determined to succeed in a male dominated world, this is definitely the read for you. Cadi Williams nightmares have returned of the almighty explosion at the greyhound public house. Now staying and working with Maria and Bill Shankley at the B&B in Derby Road her troubled sleep worries her as she applies to join the WAAF with Jez in the RAF she maybe a bit closer to him so they can see more of each other she misses him so much. Cadi & Poppy live in Wales and feel they are in a dead end job they want to join the forces but are still too young. They end up in Liverpool where in the end they end up with Maria who they work for. Cadi is an independent woman and feels she doesn’t need a man to help her. We see what happens to the two of them over the book which was good.

A lovely, easily read and meaningful tale written by one of my favourite authors, can't wait for the next book! Cadi joins the WAAF and makes friends and settles into her new role well. The book explores the war roles for women, the homelife and bombing causing housing issues, friendships made and strengthened and the issues many people faced.

Katie Flynn was born in Norwich and attended Norwich High School, where she was extremely happy and extremely undistinguished. Published at the tender age of eight, in Enid Blyton's Sunny Stories, she joined a Writers’ Circle as an adult, publishing short stories, articles, etc; only turning to novels in 1971 because the postal strike cut off her main source of income! It is a better fate than other infants have met, and the foundling is so cute and helpless that something surprising happens. The baby is not only taken in but the maid that works there, Nellie McDowell, decides to adopt this infant and will raise her up just like an authentic biological sister. I have to admit that 'The Rose Queen' of the title is only a very small part at the beginning but does start the tale of 2 Welsh lasses who want to see the wider world offered in Liverpool in WW2 A story of heartbreak and love, this book will keep you enthralled from start to finish' Northern Echo The legacy of Katie Flynn lives on through her daughter, Holly Flynn, who continues to write under the Katie Flynn name. Holly worked as an assistant to her mother for many years and together they co-authored a number of Katie Flynn novels. The kindness of this stranger sets her on a different path, and Libby heads to Liverpool with a determined mind and hope in her heart. Set just before the War, in a little village in Wales, two friends are part of the yearly celebrations with Cadi being The Rose Queen. Cadi has her heart on escaping her village and making something of her life, and not settling down and marrying Aled, the farmers son, which is her dad's desire. Of course there is a bit of romance along the way although Cadi is fiercely independent and doesn’t need a man, so will take a fair bit of persuasion to enter a relationship! Hailing from the small welsh mining village of Rhos. Cadi Williams and her best friend Poppy are fed up with the quiet boring life a village has to offer and set off to Liverpool to sign up with the forces for ww11, much against Cadi's parent's wishes. They are both 17 and underage but are so excited they have not really thought through how they are going to achieve this.
