About this deal

Tastings of whiskies bottled decades ago are rollercoaster affairs, and this one touched some impressive heights, and plumbed some intriguingly subterranean depths. But even when it was bad – three of the six whiskies had serious ‘issues’– it never ceased to be fascinating. The secret may be the closure. A pre-1945 springcap was fastened tight as a drum (and took some time to remove). The whisky revealed was a triumph, with integrated, confident smoke, butterscotch moving into darker caramel and coffee bean; and all the serenity of great age. Also being marketed as part of the White Horse collection was Glen Elgin 12 years old Highland Malt (for the Japanese market) and Lagavulin 12 years old Islay Malt. The former is still around, but no longer exclusive to Japan, and there are now many variations of Lagavulin, but without the White Horse connection, which has been eclipsed by the cult of the Islay malts, in which Lagavulin has been a major beneficiary in its own right. In Richard Yates's 1961 novel Revolutionary Road, a small model horse taken from around a White Horse whisky bottle and gifted to her by her father serves as an important symbol of nostalgia, love, and hope for April Wheeler. Noteworthy is the role that Hazelburn distillery played in the development of the Japanese whisky industry inasmuch as the “father” of Japanese whisky, Masataka Taketsuru, in effect had his apprenticeship at the distillery when he worked there for about four months in the winter of 1920 under the stewardship of Peter Margach Innes. Taketsuru produced a report based on his experience there entitled “On the Production Methods of Pot Still Whisky”. This has now been translated into English and was published in 2021 and is an important contribution to the annals of whisky history – in both Scotland and Japan.

But the sector received some good news in March when US tariffs on single malt Scotch were removed for a four‐month period. The tariffs were introduced due to an ongoing dispute between the US and the EU regarding plane manufacturers Airbus and Boeing. Even fruitier on the palate - and creamier - with light golden raisins, banana and more papaya. The smoke is very present but fairly light. Some vanilla as well, and very, very light caramel. The peat is beautiful here. Water brings out more barley sugar, crisp grain and more smoke - an improvement. Robust and complex. Diageo's White Horse blended Scotch whisky is based on Lagavulin malt and is 3 years old. The reviewed sample is from a freshly opened bottle An even earlier example of White Horse sense of humour is the advertising post card of 1908 entitled “Scotch Fun in the Olden Times” depicting kilted half-naked highlanders at play with a hint of modest inebriation amongst some of them. Again, totally incorrect politically by today's standards.

White Horse 8 Years Old appears and Glen Elgin Distillery is acquired by DCL and licensed to White Horse. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. Ownership soon passed to the Glen Elgin-Glenlivet Distillery Co. Ltd and, in 1907, to J.J. Blanche of Glasgow. DCL later acquired it through Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd and responsibility for it was subsequently passed to White Horse Distillers Ltd. Glen Elgin, like Lagavulin, is bottled at 12 years old, but is, of course, a totally different sort of dram. It is slightly sweet on the palate, which is not unusual for a Speyside. The White Horse blending and bottling facility is located alongside Port Dundas Grain Distillery in Glasgow which is owned and operated by another DCL subsidiary, Scottish Grain Distillers Ltd.”

Two of the distilleries, Lagavulin and Glen Elgin, which were once licensed to, or associated with White Horse Distillers Ltd. are still around and still owned by Diageo. And Lagavulin is rightly famous and much appreciated by the “Islayphiles”, as I call them, being one myself! It is part of Diageo’s Classic Malts selection and comes at various ages and expressions. When White Horse Distillers became part of DCL in 1927, Lagavulin was transferred within the group to its subsidiary, Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD). However, Lagavulin was subsequently licensed to White Horse Distillers Limited, thus re-establishing the old link. And so it remained for many years but, for reasons which remain unclear, that association has become somewhat fudged. We have some earlier Lagavulin expressions that were bottled at 16 years old by White Horse. From time to time, special event bottles have appeared. These include White Horse Gold Edition 1890 which was brought out exclusively for the travel retail trade to mark Chinese New Year in 2014 which was, surprise surprise, the Year of the Horse! There is also White Horse 1900, named after the year in which the brand was first exported although there is clear evidence that this was already happening in the 1890’s. It is described as a lighter version of the standard blend – presumably because it contains less Lagavulin – or perhaps none at all!. Then there is the White Horse America’s Cup 1987 expression, which is now a collector’s item. Last year’s Scotch Whisky Brand Champion, Dewar’s, reported a 12.4% decline. Meanwhile, the world’s biggest‐selling Scotch, Diageo’s Johnnie Walker blended whisky, plunged by 23.3% to 14.1m cases. Diageo’s J&B and Vat 69 brand also recorded double‐digit drops, while Bell’s returned to growth in 2020 (up by 10.8%).

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the advertising slogan of White Horse Whisky was "you can take a white horse anywhere", accompanied by a white horse in various settings, such as a garden party. [6] The distillation process spread to Scotland and Ireland by the 15th century via Alexandrian Greeks, Medieval Arabs and Latin Europeans. The Scots and the Irish, who already had a well-developed tradition of farming cereal crops, used the technique to distil from a variety of fermented grain mashes to produce a spirit, most closely resembling today's new make spirits. Blended Scotch Sir Edward’s recorded stagnant sales in 2020, but a new campaign and a beer barrel‐finished bottling could see the brand’s sales recover in 2021. Closure concerns then became a familiar theme: bottle number three, from 1957, hid notes of smoke and sulphur behind an unappealing sprouty exterior that only expanded with time. Its Bakelite closure contained a crumbling cork interior, giving ample scope for contamination.

Magana says: “There’s a positive momentum behind the standard segment, which grows at pace particularly in Brazil where the brand is a key player, and in Japan, where White Horse is the biggest Scotch brand within the market.” White Horse is featured in Mieko Kawakami's Breast and Eggs: A Novel (2020) as the main feature of the "all you can drink special" at the Chanel Bar in Tokyo. Nothing in the Terms shall exclude or limit our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or for death or personal injury resulting from gross negligence or willful misconduct by us. After the Second World War, explained Dr Morgan, there were profound changes in the way that Scotch whisky was made. New excise laws permitted producers to mash, ferment and distil concurrently, allowing them effectively to treble their production overnight – meaning that equipment could be run harder, with a potentially negative impact on spirit quality.Regardless of whether the Service offers the functionality to contribute, you are solely responsible and liable for any content and information that you create, upload, post, publish, link to, duplicate, transmit, record, display or otherwise make available on the Service or to other Members, such as chat messages, text messages, videos, audio, audio recordings, music, pictures, photographs, text and any other information or materials, whether publicly posted or privately transmitted (“Contributions”). There is an excellent coverage of Sir Peter in Allen Andrews’ book “ The Whisky Barons” (1977, 2 nd edition 2003) - again, see Whisky Biblioteca.

The brand’s horse icon was “evolved” in 2021 to become more “distinctive within the category”, adds Magana. Brazil, which makes up more than half of the brand’s business, is where the company will focus on recruiting new consumers into the category. The company will also tap into current and emerging lifestyle trends across its key market. Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. Given its long history and being a major brand in the times of expansion for the Scotch whisky industry, the company was a vigorous proponent of advertising, not only in the print media, but also in all manner of promotional activities. White Horse Cellar blend enters UK domestic market and Logan’s Perfection is launched as a deluxe version.

Age:

This spirit was used 'for medicinal purposes' for some time, but started to become widely adopted as a beverage of choice and a good way to use up excess grains, keeping them safe from the rats' clutches. Once the spirit started to be stored in oak barrels, it was noticed that this had the delightful consequence of providing flavour and colour, giving it a deeper and more mellow taste than the raw spirit. Today, whisky must be aged for at least 3 years in an oak Barrel before it can legally be called "whisky". A particularly good example of White Horse creativity in their advertising is a hilarious 1961 video of the brand’s global positioning, although some of the ethnic characterization might not pass muster today! The company produced a booklet in 1935 entitled “Scotch: from Birth to Glorious Maturity”, which is now very hard to find.
