In The Radiator Springs 500½, Guido appears among all of the other Radiator Springs residents, celebrating the founding of Radiator Springs and honoring Stanley. Guido's paint scheme in this short is light green, with a cap and fenders of a darker green color.
In Cars, Luigi is unhappy with Lightning at first, as he is only a Piston Cup racer, and not a Ferrari. However, Luigi begins to like him after a while, like the other townsfolk do, and joins Lightning's crew at the Los Angeles International Speedway as Guido's coach. The 1952 Walt Disney Studios short, “Susie, the Little Blue Coupe,” served as the impetus that sparked the idea for Cars decades later. DJ and his friends are first seen in the cutscene for Delinquent Road Hazards, where they prevent Lightning from entering a certain road in Tailfin Pass, and McQueen responds by challenging them to a race, and trashtalking them. After Lightning wins, they tell him it "isn't over", and angrily speed away. In Cars: The Videogame, DJ first appears as one of the speeders that Sheriff must chase down in the "Delinquents" level of Sheriff's Hot Pursuit, alongside Sonny and Wingo. Several of Lightning's friends go to the race to act as McQueen's pit crew, much to his pleasant surprise. However, Sally stays home in Radiator Springs, and she, Lizzie, and Red watch the race from a television at Flo's café. Although Lightning loses the race, his good sportsmanship towards Strip Weathers makes him the true winner in the eyes of many fans, as well as Tex Dinoco, who offers him the coveted Dinoco sponsorship.Following McQueen's third Piston Cup victory, Lightning and Sally go on the drive, to the Wheel Well Motel in Tailfin Pass, which turns out to be a race. Once the two reach the Wheel Well, they look over Radiator Springs, and reminisce about their first trip to the motel.
At sunrise the following day, the residents of Radiator Springs awaken to find the road completed and Lightning nowhere to be seen, and sadly discuss Lightning's absence. Lightning, however, rolls up and questions what the fuss is about, and the townsfolk inform him that he is free to leave and arrive at his race. Lightning, however, calls upon his new friends to stay an extra day in the town. Lightning is one of the six playable characters, the other five being Cruz Ramirez, Mater, Sally, Ramone, and Guido, who are available from the start in Cars 3: Driven to Win. His "Fabulous" paint job was also made available in a free update, which was released to coincide with the cinematic release of Cars 3. On average, it took 17 hours to render each frame of the film. In addition, it was the first Pixar film to use ray-tracing to accurately create the reflections on the cars. While Sally has not appeared in the video games Cars: Mater-National Championship, Cars: Race-O-Rama, Cars 2: The Video Game, or Cars: Fast as Lightning, she is constantly mentioned across all four games. Guido has also been shown to be on good terms with most, if not all, of Radiator Springs' residents and visitors. According to Cars: Mater-National Championship, he is apparently a good racer, with good acceleration and handling, though his boost is weak. In Air Mater, once Lightning joins the Falcon Hawks with Mater after one of the members is damaged, Lightning is called Lightning McQueen Hawk as to fit in with the names of the other Falcon Hawks.
Ironically, his pit stop speed can be easily beaten by a real life F1 team (though F1 only has one lug nut) Sally's tattoo pinstriping is left over from her early day. Though she's a little embarrassed by it now, it severs as a reminder of her high-speed life i California and now happy she is to be cruising in the slow lane. Right before McQueen leaves to the Rust-Eze Racing Center - he and Sally are exchanging with the love-lines. However, Lightning's closest relationships include Mater and Sally, as well as Doc Hudson, prior to his death. Sally, however, is Lightning's romantic interest. Upon meeting her in the courtroom, Lightning began to develop a crush on her, and the two would later begin to date at the end of Cars. Some of their favorite pastimes together including taking drives through Tailfin Pass, as well as enjoying a quiet evening at the Wheel Well Motel. Lightning is built for speed and has just two things on his mind: winning and the perks that come with it. Lightning is Radiator Spring's newest and most famous resident. He ended up here by accident, but found so many friends that he never left! In Cars Toon: Mater's Tall Tales, Lightning appears in all of the sets of minigames. Notably, in the Mater the Greater levels, he suddenly appears up in the air, when the player is about to dive into a small paddling pool. Unlike in the short, he does not go across Carburetor Canyon, but like that, he does not make it into the pool.Sally still appears to cheer for Lightning on the last race of the 2016 Piston Cup Season at the Los Angeles 500 and she is horrified watching McQueen's crash, immediately coming to him to help. Cars: Fast as Lightning: One of Lightning's paint jobs, " Retro Look", references his appearance in Cars.
