About this deal

PTC heating elements are made with advanced conductive ceramic materials. They have a positive resistance change when exposed to an increasing temperature. As the element is exposed to more heat, the ceramic restricts the passage of the current through the component. Conversely, when exposed to a lower temperature, it will increase the passage of current. This is how it is able to create, maintain, and self-monitor heat. As long as these sensors and the associated switches are working properly, this system is very safe. However, if a sensor or switch were to malfunction, there would be nothing to stop the unit from overheating.

Current passes through the ceramic, causing it to heat up. The heat is then transferred to the highly conductive aluminum fins. These fins can transfer heat to the air through convection or they can be used with an internal fan to push air over them and out into the room. Nichrome, like other conductive wires, has a positive temperature coefficient. But unlike PTC elements, the current is not slowed enough at high temperatures to stop the wire from getting dangerously hot. The smaller applications require less voltage and electricity but require precise temperature control at all times. Positive temperature coefficient PTC heaters are ideal for these applications. The element can be installed vertically or horizontally at the bottom of the towel rail or radiator. As mentioned above, engineers can design a PTC heater to fulfill customized heating solutions that are as intricate as required.

These self-regulating heaters are customarily prewired at the manufacturer and installed on other devices. The manufacturer ensures the quality and electrical isolation of the connections. The ceramic components are small and difficult to install without specialized tools. PTC heaters come with a lot of promises about being more efficient, safer, and more effective. For these reasons, many space heater manufacturers are switching to PTC elements. Most standard heaters come equipped with traditional resistance wires and coils to generate heat. A PTC heater eschews this setup. When powered on, the PTC thermistor heats up by itself. The surface temperature of the constant-temperature heating PTC thermistor will maintain a constant value. This temperature is related to the constant temperature of the PTC thermistor. Multiple heating pieces of the same voltage are connected in parallel and installed side by side. The heating pieces cannot be installed overlappingly, otherwise, the heat will offset.

Remote SCDA systems where electronics and controls need protection from extreme environments are another example. The PTC ceramic heating elements provide an ideal solution for both applications. Like traditional electric space heaters, PTC space heaters turn electricity into heat. Both types use fans or convection to move this heat into the environment and come with multiple heat and mode settings. The electric heating element must always be installed into a radiator of towel rail which has been pre-filled with heating solution. If the element is exposed to air and turned on it will burn out. This misuse is not covered under the manufacturer guarantee.

PTC Technical

The role of Positive Temperature Coefficient materials are materials that demonstrate a positive resistance change as temperatures increase. Note: If the element fails or is damaged in some way, it will stop moving current altogether. This means that even a malfunctioning PTC heater element cannot overheat.

Because PTC heater elements are self-limiting, they do not require extra sensors or switches. Instead, the heating element itself acts to limit heat output. As the temperature of the element rises, the current moving through the element is slowed at a proportional rate. Resistance wire, they type we see in many heaters, works on a different principle. When current is flowing through the wire, the resistance in the wire creates the heat. A separate device does control of the current in the circuit that senses temperature and restricts the flow of current.

Balanced Heating: The current flows through the entire element at the same rate which avoids dangerous hot spots and inefficient uneven heating. If you’re curious about how PTC heating elements will work in your appliances, keep reading. What is a PTC Heating Element?
