About this deal

LEGO: Available from September 1, 2022 — LEGO Marvel 76231 Guardians of the Galaxy Advent Calendar build —

The chestnuts are roasting, the carol singers and clearing their throats, and you’d be wise to wear a helmet and pads if you so much as step foot inside a department store on a Saturday afternoon. This can all mean only one thing: the Christmas season has arrived, with December just days away. Unsurprisingly, Day 1 of the Guardians of the Galaxy Advent Calendar begins with Star-Lord, leader of the Guardians. The special revolves around Mantis, Drax and the rest of the Ravagers crew on Knowhere trying to cheer Star-Lord (aka Peter Quill) up with some Christmas spirit and festivities. Not bad from Day 10, and with so many cool and unique spaceship designs to draw from, I sure hope this won’t be the last micro-build we see! The Star Wars Advent Calendar ( see it at Walmart) is mostly spacecraft and droid builds from the movies. My favorite was a miniature AT-ST Walker, which the designers depicted in perfect minimalist fashion. I loved the Advanced TIE Fighter, which again captured the key design elements of the build in a very spare, suggestive manner. And in terms of Christmas-themed accessories, you cannot get cuter than R2-D2 in a Christmas sweater. Honestly, it’s quite bland like Turkey (sorry to all the Turkey fans, but ham is better), and feels like it should’ve been paired with another build as it’s not substantial at all, or very GOTG.Despite giving a daily recap of each of the LEGO® Advent Calendars for the last few years, I’ve never actually reviewed one, until now. Last year, the long-running LEGO Advent Calendars range expanded to include a Marvel-themed one. It was focused on the Avengers and featured a mix of minibuilds and minifigures inspired by Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. This year’s offer is a little more intergalactic and is inspired by the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Disney+ Holiday Special. The exact story of this small screen spin-off is currently unknown but it’s safe to assume it will be at least a little festive. Things are starting to look up with the LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy Advent Calendar with Day 10’s Laser Drill Spaceship, a mining craft piloted (and stolen) by Yondu in GOTG Vol 2 to drill a hole into Ego the living planet. Even the 3-day ship feels like it should’ve been kept to 2 days at the max, but this has been quite poor, especially when you compare it against the Star Wars, Harry Potter and even Friends Advent Calendars which have largely been excellent. I also really like the printed casette tape, which I believe is a new element and exclusive to this Advent Calendar, so this is really a pretty decent window, even if the build is somewhat on the smaller side of things.

LEGO Marvel 76231 Guardians of the Galaxy Advent Calendar launches alongside four other seasonal sets in 75340 LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar, 76404 LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendar, 60352 LEGO CITY Advent Calendar and 41706 LEGO Friends Advent Calendar. No matter your interest, that line-up should have something for everyone to enjoy over the holiday season. LEGO Friends advent calendar: Designed with a focus on friendship and everyday activities, this calendar includes mini-builds related to the LEGO Friends characters.

The torso with the Ravagers design isn’t new, but has appeared only once in 76193 The Guardians’ Ship, making this a really budget-friendly way to get if you can’t afford the bigger ship! Speaking of Easter eggs, one door holds a crate of items from past Guardians of the Galaxy adventures, including a prosthetic eye, Yondu’s arrow, the Power Stone containment orb and what might be an Anulax Battery from the sequel. Consider your budget: LEGO advent calendars vary in price, so choose one that fits your budget while providing the desired features. Some older advent calendars from previous years are cheaper, so keep this in mind if you’re on the hunt for a bargain. Day 11 is a nice nod to these historical LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy sets, but their simplistic designs does leave much to be desired. At least we got 2 of them in one window, and I’m glad they weren’t stretched out across 2 days, which would’ve been tragic. This is the correct orientation of the build, so the instructions on the flap are upside down, but you should remember these pesky drones from the prison break scene in the first Guardians movie, and are especially memorable as we get the first “I am Groot” from Groot as he takes a whole swarm of them down.

As always, the instruction of each day’s builds are printed on the inside of the doors, so be careful and try not to rip them out! The LEGO Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy Advent Calendar 2022 contains an awesome surprise toy behind each of the 24 doors for kids to discover After yesterday’s random candy cane (which I’m informed by many of you is Mantis’ that she stole from Kevin Bacon), Day 16 gives us a Hi-Fi system. It utilises the same cassette tape from the walkman, and also comes with 2 bookshelf speakers.

LEGO Harry Potter advent calendar: Harry Potter enthusiasts can find magical surprises like characters, items, and settings from the wizarding world in this calendar. And that’s it for the Guardians of the Galaxy Advent Calendar! To be honest, I’m mostly disappointed by the Calendar, mostly because of strings of forgettable days and builds, with items that were a stretch to connect to Christmas, the Guardians of the Galaxy or even the Holiday Special. The design does leave much to be desired (the story of this Advent Calendar so far), as it’s quite flat, and I really dislike the long tile on top of it. Kids can mix the gifts to recreate their favourite scenes from the Marvel movies, imagine new adventures or combine with other LEGO Marvel sets The image doesn’t spoil ALL of the contents, but in addition to C-3PO and R2-D2 in ugly christmas sweaters, we also get a beach Darth Vader, Snow Trooper, Battle Droid and a Clone Commander, which looks suspiciously like the one from the UCS Republic Gunship.
