Moving inside, I think the iPhone SE does a better job handling this photo of a meatball sandwich, with a warmer tone than what the Pixel 6a produces. That tone makes the sandwich look more appetizing, with the melted cheese looking pleasantly caramelized and the Italian seasoning dotting the cheese standing out a little bit more. The iPhone SE also did a better job with the light streaming in from a nearby window, which adds some overexposure in the upper right corner of the Pixel 6a photo. The Android software you get out of the box is simple to use and easy to navigate. There are neat customisation options, like the ability to match the colour of your icons to your wallpaper, plus the return of live translation that helps you converse in 11 languages or read text you don't understand from photos — perfect for your next jaunt abroad. The Pixel 6a debuted with Android 12, but it's already able to run Android 13— the first of three years of software updates Google guarantees for its budget phone. However, in a world where Samsung now guarantees four Android updates for phones including the Galaxy A53, Google's policy feels a little skimpy. Hopefully, now that it's making its own silicon, Google will get a little more generous with its software updates. Google Pixel 6a vs. Google Pixel 7 In other circumstances, the difference is more negligible. Maybe you can spot the differences in this photo of a plate of sushi, but to my eyes, the Pixel 6a's effort is every bit as good as what the Pixel 7 produces. The Pixel 6a’s scenic images are simply stunning, producing sharp, intricate details and accurate exposures every time you press the shutter button. On a sunny weekend walk around Valentines Park in London, the Pixel 6a captured sun-dried foliage beautifully, with a pleasingly neutral colour rendition to boot.

More AI features for this more affordable handset are 'Face Unblur', which does exactly what it sounds like and stops faces in photos from being blurry, plus its True Tone tech, which makes the cameras more effective at accurately showing darker skin tones in portraits. The only tool missing is Motion Mode, which adds effects to moving objects. So if that's a major draw, you'll have to spend more for the flagships. The new Pixel 7a boasts the latest 2nd-gen version of this chip, but our long-term use hasn't changed our opinion on its performance: It's smooth and speedy to use, and we haven't encountered crashes or shuttering when taking snaps. Since it never launched in the UK, I sadly don’t have the Pixel 5a benchmark test results for comparison, but suffice to say the performance gains between the now two-year-old Pixel 4a 5G and the new Pixel 6a are colossal.
