About this deal

Because I may haven't been clear enough about the secondary characters : every one of them could have died without arousing any emotion in me. Plot: This novella is set before the main events of the series and we see a young 16 year old Paige Mahoney just starting out with Jaxon Hall and the rest of the other seven seals in London. She is still new to being with a group and still learning the ropes of the syndicate and Samantha gives you some information how things work within the syndicate and it definitely cleared up all the things that i wanted answered that the main series sometimes doesn't get the chance to do.

The year is 2059. Nineteen-year-old Paige Mahoney is working in the criminal underworld of Scion London, based at Seven Dials, employed by a man named Jaxon Hall. Her job: to scout for information by locating human minds. Paige is a dreamwalker, the rarest type of clairvoyant and, in the world of Scion, she commits treason simply by breathing. Arcturus... what can I say? I joked with some friends that I was worried I was temporarily trading in my feminist card for how much I loved his character, despite his being portrayed as her "captor". I won't spoil the ending, but there's a lot more than meets the eye with this big teddy bear.

Reviews

The book series is supposed to have around seven books, at the minute I don't know how the story will last that long, but hopefully that promises an expanding storyline that we will encounter in the second book. Accidental Pun: Nashira calls Paige a free spirit, which is appropriate, given that her spirit regularly leave the confines of her body. Paige: I love her, even if she keeps PUSHING PEOPLE (WARDEN) AWAY. But she’s my badass girl and I love her<3 You have attracted the attention of the blood-consort: Arcturus, Warden of the Mesarthim. He has decided to be your keeper.” I don't want to say much else beyond the fact that my emotions as still all over the place after that cliffhanger and I don't know what I'm going to do while I eagerly await TBS5. (Probably come up with a ton of new theories.) The Mask Falling was a journey that definitely left me on the edge of my seat and left a lot unknown about the future. Bring on book hangover mode as I try not to just reread the whole series over and over again! As always this book was completely worth the wait.

There's a quote in The Mask Falling that perfectly describes not only my feelings towards this installment but the whole series in general so far; "I am of the considered opinion that for every person, there exists a book that will sing to them. I trust that you will find yours." I always say, with each new one that I read, how fond I am of this series, how incredible it is, how potent it is, how dear it is to my heart. But when I read that quote I realized, to sum it up, it truly is a series that sings to me. Add to that the fact of discovering the dynamics of the perdues and the Underground and we just have a very compelling and all-encompassing book.

About the contributors

There is a sense that adults who read YA are reading down but I don’t think that’s true at all,” said Shannon in an interview with BBC. “It’s fine for all ages to read whatever they want and I think it’s important to always encourage reading.” The Pale Dreamer is the prequel to The Bone Season which I am hoping to read in the not too distant future, and the first piece I have ever read by Shannon. I went into this novella blind, and found that I actually really enjoyed this novella. It reminded me quite a bit of The Archived and The Unbound by Victoria Schwab (another series I love) as it focuses on the spirits of the dead and how to "contain" them, and the London setting also reminded me of Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. It’s clear that Samantha Shannon was intentional about putting Arcturus and Paige on equal footing for the first time in The Mask Falling. She manages the power dynamic between them with such attention and nuance, reversing their roles often and fluidly escaping gender roles. The protector role comes naturally to Arcturus, given his immortal strength and anxiety about losing Paige (it’s even part of the etymology of their names), but for much of The Mask Falling he is her silent shadow, trailing behind her and supporting her quietly. They negotiate their differences with refreshing candor and in good faith, their arguments free from ego. “My fear is not your cage,” Arcturus tells her. “I will never ask you to mold yourself to it.” His affection for her is empowering, supportive, never constrictive or diminishing. Paige herself is markedly independent, doing the bulk of her fighting and plotting on her own. When she does seek support from Arcturus, there is no sense of her own strength being diminished, and as often as he rescues her, she turns around and rescues him just as easily.

The aliens "feed" on clairvoyant humans in a way similar to vampirism. Her master drinks her blood. You know how I feel about blood-drinking - it's disgusting. You are not going to drown, Paige Mahoney. You are a dreamwalker, and you know how to go without breath.”In London, Paige Mahoney holds a high rank in the criminal underworld. The right hand of the ruthless White Binder, Paige is a dreamwalker, a rare and formidable kind of clairvoyant. Under Scion law, she commits treason simply by breathing. The secondary characters are one-dimensional and the relationships feel so damn forced. I don't care about any of them. Why should I, really? I don't know them. And I might be a bitch, but I wondered why Paige was helping them from the get-go. No. Really. They don't show any kind of connection so why?! I'll tell you why : to manufacture some kind of martyr strike in Paige, because apparently it's a must-have for any spechul female-lead out there. The third installment, The Song Rising was released on 7 March 2017. [20] In 2020 Shannon released an additional e-book novella, The Dawn Chorus, set between the third and fourth novels. [21] The fourth installment was released January 26, 2021 and it is called The Mask Falling. [22] Brutal Honesty: When Paige observes that he treats the humans at Magdalen as his butlers, Warden corrects her: "Slaves, Paige. Let us not be delicate."
