About this deal

Here’s your standard music critic view of Weezer: Pinkerton is their best album. There’s nothing contrarian, revolutionary, or even very interesting about saying that. But you know what: it’s true. Pinkerton is the best album that Weezer ever wrote, and it’s probably the best piece of work that Rivers Cuomo will ever attach his name to. Other than that, however, Maladroit is a good example of what Weezer can achieve, if they take out their heads from their own buttholes.

There’s a good chance that in the audience at any given Weezer show, there’s a guy named Jonas who goes nuts as soon as that acoustic jingle at the start of “My Name Is Jonas” rings out. The opening song on Weezer’s first album is a goofy, absurdist yarn about Cuomo’s brother getting stiffed by his car insurance provider. The lyrics don’t make a lot of sense if you try to parse them – what kind of a name is Wepeel? Why are the workers going home? – but the song is an absolute joy among Weezer songs, right down to its climactic harmonica solo. 4: Across the Sea

Listening to every Weezer album from worst rated to best nondescript guitars play over boring lyrics. but I like this type of music so I dont mind; melodies are fun and catchy occasionally; songs are fun. yay yay. I like this more than green, more exciting. (too many guitar solos) song is quite boring, topic is boring, sounds boring. I dont really have anything to say besides this is exactly how I thought every weezer song would sound like before I listened to them Beaumont, Mark (December 21, 2002). "Weezer: Maladroit". NME. Archived from the original on March 3, 2016 . Retrieved January 25, 2011. I enjoy this song, it is catchy. I like this song I like it. I find lyrics a little very bad but I like the song outside of that. another guitar solo that I find pointless too, I dont know why so many songs have a guitar solo it ruins the pace of the entire song.

Prior to the album's release, the band created a promotional CD featuring eight songs titled Songs from the Forthcoming "Maladroit", again without the label's foreknowledge, and sent it to hundreds of radio stations. Said Koch: However, as I have learned so far, every Weezer album has it's Achilles heel, it's total and complete weakness that crushes an important part of the whole experience. In this case, Maladroit's second half is boring as hell. And I really mean it, the last four songs make me sleep.

As with all Weezer albums, it was an album of firsts. It was the first album to feature current bassist Scott Shriner after the breakdown and departure of Mikey Welsh, the first to contain a booklet with lyrics (which included a special message thanking Weezer boardies), and the first to feature more than ten songs. The first 600,000 copies of Maladroit were numbered in a limited edition, with gold foil digits at the bottom corner. The songwriting here is very fun, quirky and exotic, and Rivers Cuomo has the time of his life on some of these songs. Scott Shriner is a member of Weezer for the first time, hey Scott! Spin ended up calling it the 6th best album of 2002, [34] and Rolling Stone readers voted it as the 8th best of the year. [35] In another Rolling Stone readers poll, it was voted the 90th greatest album of all time. [6] song is pretty fun too, I just do not like it as much due to annoying chorus. I find rivers saying "Oh" a bunch to be a really unexciting chorus. Everything else about this song is fine though. I hope rivers beats up my man. Top 200 Albums of 2002 (based on sales)". Jam!. Archived from the original on September 6, 2004 . Retrieved March 23, 2022.In a 2022 retrospective on the occasion of Maladroit's 20th anniversary, Stereogum writer Rachel Brodsky said of the record, "In terms of actual album content, Maladroit is so much better than most remember. It’s a peculiar kind of aging, and what you think of the album may have everything to do with how old you are. For those ’90s die-hards who won’t accept anything after Pinkerton, Maladroit represents a broken, unacceptable band on a perma-decline. For the younger sect — say, anyone born in or after the ’90s — Maladroit is early enough in Weezer’s overall catalog that it represents an acceptable entry point before things got really bad." [10] Individual songs Reviewer Due to the head start that "Dope Nose" was given, it proved to be yet another successful single for the band. An additional single, "Keep Fishin'", was released in September of 2002 with a music video featuring The Muppets (yes, THE Muppets). The Not-Remix: Though they re-recorded "Keep Fishin'" entirely for the music video and single version, the most discernable differences are a new acoustic guitar intro note the album version starts with a couple measures of drums instead and a slightly different ending. There’s very little doubt that the latter accusation was not meant as a compliment, but perhaps its reflective of how enigmatic Rivers was at this point that it never crossed the writer’s mind that he might take it as one.

(To be fair, lots of people do legitimately enjoy their latter- and present-day material too, and Maladroit probably sounds like a masterpiece to those people.)

Cuomo: Yeah, or asking me to play a certain song. They’re all little bitches, so I avoid them at all costs. Of course, this wouldn’t be the last time that Weezer embraced their heavier side – they made an album called Van Weezer for pity’s sake – but Malardoit would be arguably the last time that Rivers presented himself to the world without a protective shield of irony around everything he did, keeping fans and critics alike at arms length, never allowing us to spot sincerity without a hint of snark.
