About this deal

Cheatham SW, et al. (2021). Mechanical percussion devices: A survey of practice patterns among healthcare professionals. Massage tools: Foam rollers, tennis balls, and massage balls can help release tension in specific areas. You’ll want something easy to use as well, so think about possible Bluetooth connections or at least some sort of instruction manual – whether on an app or printed. I’m not talking “just turn it on” easy to use, but I do think you want something that will at least make it easier to reach all muscles without forcing you to use this massage gun on your bones. It impressed straight out of the box, arriving in a neatly-presented carry case. Unlike many massage guns, it was surprisingly quiet, even at full speed, and was able to glide smoothly over skin without snagging or causing discomfort. It was lightweight too, making it easy to manoeuvre, and came with handy diagrams to help us get the most out of it. To be fair we always had mixed feelings about the first generation Theragun mini, which is still available at a reduced price. On the one hand, being a premium product it has some unique features. We’ll call those:

Battery life - a couple of massage guns on our list have batteries which will keep going for eight hours; other massage guns will need charging more frequentlyCordless and rechargeable, the best massage guns offer a choice of different attachment heads in different shapes and sizes. Whether you want to work on your shoulders, glutes, quads, spine or Achilles tendon, you should be covered. More to read See our Theragun mini 1.0 vs 2.0 comparison. On the last two photos, you can see how smaller the new mini 2.0 is Vs. the mini 1.0, when compared to Ekrin Bantam and bigger Hypervolt Go 2 Perhaps the most important feature, as far as the performance is concerned, is the Bantam’s ability to give an intense, deep tissue massage without slowing down percussions upon pressing it harder to larger muscles. This is where 95% of other mini massage guns fail miserably. They’re just too weak for the job. We independently verified the Bantam’s ability to deliver 3200 percussions per minute.

Also known as percussive massagers, massage guns may look a bit menacing, but they have only good intentions. By providing short bursts of pressure into your muscle tissue, they increase blood flow to the targeted area, helping to ease all sorts of aches and pains. If you’re absolutely tight on budget then this mini massage gun will serve you well. It won’t offer you the best in power but it’s very low-priced. They also don’t get any points over any of the others as far as portability. It’s worse really, no pouch, no case, nothing! Again, just make sure you take time to learn how to go about using a massage gun correctly. Most of the ones listed below don’t really come with instructions. But if you’re still struggling to figure out how best to use your massage gun, there are plenty of videos on YouTube that show you to wield one of these powerful massagers effectively and safely. Ensuring your massage gun is charged up, choose the speed and head attachment most suited to the area of your body you’re targeting. Then turn it on and hold it an inch or so from your skin allowing it to ‘float’ and pulsate over your intended target. In fact, the longer the stroke (amplitude), the slower device will percuss. For example the Theragun Mini may have only 2400rpms but it makes up for the reduced speed with a 12mm long stroke. On the other hand, Ekrin Bantam has ~20% less amplitude, but revs up to 3200rpms – a whooping 800rpm difference. The body makes this byproduct when there is not enough oxygen in the muscles to produce energy. And this is common. As our bodies start to perform more intensive exercises, we naturally begin to breathe faster to try and get more oxygen into the body. That usually works, but there are some situations where working muscles require the production of energy much faster – they can’t just wait around for our oxygen. This is where anaerobic respiration occurs. Theragun is still the most expensive, and it offers Bluetooth connectivity and an intuitive smartphone app to try and make up the value. Hyperice has emerged as a rather popular and reliable brand, and it was announced that the NBA has signed the company as the league’s official recovery partner. Then you also have slightly more affordable options like Hydragun and TimTam, then newcomers like the Healsage massage gun and differently sized expressions in the Theragun massage guns line. It has a disappointing stall force of only about 12-15 lbs (our estimation). It stalls very easily, unfortunately, and it’s feels very underpowered compared to all guns on this list (maybe except of the Dyna Mini, but Dyna is like 30-40% smaller)
