About this deal

Hope you get on well but if its a near full skim you need then I don't think Smoothover is the most cost/time effective way, small patches yes, full skim no. (that probably goes for easyfill/skim etc unless you have all the right gear & can use it well) Using the wrong type of roller can cause foaming of a paint film. Sponge or foam rollers should be avoided with water-based paints. Long pile rollers must be wetted out properly. Foaming happens when air gets into the wet paint film to create air bubbles. When these bubbles burst craters are left on the film surface. Sometimes these craters dry to give an even film. Putting it right This is caused by painting over contaminated surfaces such as wax, oil or polish. The paint cannot adhere to the surface and draws away leaving unpainted areas. This can also be caused by contamination on the brush. Putting it right Firstly, if you’re using water-based paint, it’s important to ensure the Polyfilla is completely dry before painting; otherwise, the paint won’t adhere properly to the surface.

Paint flaking can occur with a number of different factors. Most commonly, improper application to the wall and too much hard grain is used. Improper mixing: If you’ve mixed the filler incorrectly, it may not have the right consistency to dry properly.Although obvious, flaky pieces of paint on the floor in your home is a sign. This is caused by paint failure and when the paint curls up and shatters, collapsing onto the floor. My house is nearly 70 years old & I initially went down the smoothover route as I had the whole house to do and the walls were in very good condition apart from a few digs & scrapes as it was a well kept one owner house with only one layer of wall paper & the original ceiling paint underneath. Make sure that all filled areas are rubbed down smooth and level. You will need to prime the filler before painting to prevent subsequent coats being absorbed more rapidly than on other areas. Use a coat of Dulux emulsion thinned 10-20% with clean water. Once this is dried you can apply a full coat of Dulux emulsion. Increase ventilation: Good ventilation by opening windows and doors or using a fan to increase airflow to help the filler dry faster by circulating air around it. Generally, Polyfilla takes 24 hours to dry under normal conditions. However, allowing 48 hours before sanding, painting, or drilling the surface is recommended. How to Mix and Use Polyfilla Powder Depressions or surface blemishes in the paint film. A common cause is rain that has fallen on the surface before the film has had chance to fully dry. Putting it right This is usually caused by contamination of the underlying surface by soluble stains. Putting it right This is a common occurrence in new houses and is often the result of plaster drying out or movement of the building. Putting it rightIn-between these stages you’ll need to give each step a chance to dry out for your wall. One of the most common reasons for paint peeling is a wet surface for where the paint lies. So be sure to let the wall thoroughly dry between each stage. Loss of gloss is normally only noticed with high gloss paint & varnishes. It is caused by the settling of dew or condensation on the paint shortly after application. This is often a problem when painting out of season, or in areas of high condensation like bathrooms. Putting it right Read the full answer... 7 How do you make repairs when you start to peel off old wallpaper and it takes off the plaster surface as well? Begin by removing all the loose paint you find on the walls by using your wall scraper. It’s recommended to have a good sharp edge high-quality scraper to get the best results. Another alternative, the areas showing raised roller marks is to start again by sanding down after the paint is completely dry. Then once dry, wipe down the areas where you sanded and add another layer of fresh paint.

Ensure you scrape the paint up until you reach the surface. Hold the scraper securely in your comfortable hand and carry out the same arm movement throughout. The motion is to stroke upwards and to repeat the same motion for best results. If any wood comes up with the paint, stop. Adding a second coat of paint will get rid of streaks left by rollers. You can make the job more seamless by taking a brush and going over the streaky areas to smooth out. Resins present in knots causing light coloured paints to discolour or even flake. Resin bleed and flaking is a common problem where dark colours are used on south facing elevations. This is because dark colours absorb more heat than light colours.

How to apply

When the surface is thoroughly dry the affected surface will need to be rubbed down using 'wet and dry' abrasive paper. It can then be re-coated. This should only be done once the conditions improve or when the condensation problem is resolved.
