About this deal

It would be really great if it would be available as a book. Creating hypothetical animals is a hobby of me I had already in primary school, and in general I always tried to stay realistic. I had this basic idea (K/T extinction event was caused by dinosaurs with human-equivalent intelligence via anthropogenic (dinosaurogenic?) climate change and/or weapons of mass destruction) about 5 years ago, without ever having heard of either McLoughlin or Magee.

This is one of my all-time favourite series – and this installment was eagerly awaited and did not disappoint, as usual. There is just something charming and compulsive about this series that makes me very happy. The Hanging Tree is definitely one of the best in the Grant/Aaronovitch pantheon. There again, so have most of the previous books in the series and the odds are the next one probably will be too. (The Bookbag) Lies Sleeping will prove to be extremely appealing to huge range of people; not only pre-existing fans of the series but also those readers who have not read any of the Rivers of London books before. As a first-time Aaronovitch reader, I found that it was incredibly easy to step in and enjoy this series, as the author did a fantastic job making Lies Sleeping accessible to everyone. While Aaronovitch has created a huge amount of lore around his series, including in his novellas and comics, the reader does not need to have any knowledge of these or the previous six books in the series to fully understand the entirety of Lies Sleeping’s story. However, those readers who do have experience with this series will love how the story continues to development, as well as the massive and surprising twists that occur throughout the book. I had fun while reading this, but I can't say that I enjoyed it as much as I did previous instalments in the Rivers of London series. Peter's narrative voice is as fun as always, there's the potential for comedy and drama in the promised arrival of a baby Brook, and I'm glad that the Chorley storyline has been wrapped up (he couldn't go on doing Spectacularly Evil Stuff indefinitely without being omnipotent and/or making the Folly team seem incompetent.) I had a lot of feelings about Leslie May. I could have done without all the Dark Ages references, but at least Peter was very insistent on the fact that King Arthur is a mythical figure and the invention of Geoffrey of Monmouth. (I honestly would read at least a novella's worth of Peter Grant talking critical source analysis of medieval texts, especially if it works in as many Discworld references along the way as Lies Sleeping does.) There is some humor in it, but not as much as earlier books. Peter feels more grown up, which was both nice, and a little sad. It happens to us all, but those earlier days of innocence are kind of fun. Abigail Kamara; an annoyingly persistent teen-aged girl who is the de facto founding member of the Folly's Youth Wing. Lives at the same estate as Peter's parents. And I felt such a visceral reaction to everything Leslie did; that was truly some excellent writing. When she shot Chorley, I was as aghast as Peter. She went fully Dark Side. Was it because she still had a twisted notion of justice or things to hide? I'm cynical enough I went with things to hide.Like humans, dogs can twitch in their sleep. This can happen between sleep stages and this is completely normal. Dreaming While I would have already been tempted to give Lies Sleeping a five-star review, the thing that definitely clinches it for me is the amazing audiobook adaption of the novel, narrated by actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. At nearly 10 hours and 30 minutes, this is a moderately easy audiobook to get through, and I had an absolute blast listening to it. Holdbrook-Smith has an amazing voice and his work narrating this audiobook was just incredible. His voice for protagonist and story narrator Peter perfectly encapsulated the character and got the full force of his witty and enjoyable personality across to the reader. I really liked all the voices that Holdbrook-Smith created for the various characters featured throughout Lies Sleeping, especially for some of the magical creatures, who had an air of ancient wisdom in their voices. However, without a doubt my favourite voice was the one for Nightingale. The voice chosen for Nightingale is full of all sorts of old British class, and I thought it fit the character perfectly and was one of my favourite parts of this whole audiobook. Aside from the outstanding voice work, I also quite liked the jazzy music that was played at the start of each chapter. It gave the book a real noir private investigator feel, and I like how it added to the tone of the book as a whole. The audiobook version of this book also helped me understand the story a bit better as an outsider to the series, and that, combined with Holdbrook-Smith’s brilliant voice work, makes me completely happy to recommend the audiobook format of Lies Sleeping. This was very fast-paced and I loved so see more "battle magic". Equally, I also loved to see all the lessons finally bearing fruit and being put to good use (not just by Peter). Lies Sleeping, for me, was a good continuation of Aaronovich’s Peter Grant series. I’m not saying it was a flawless masterpiece, but it was enjoyable. I didn’t find myself thrashing through it like I had other books in the series, however. The Hanging Tree by Ben Aaronovitch: 9780756409678 | PenguinRandomHouse.com: Books". PenguinRandomhouse.com.
