I have only read two MKA books, prior to this one. I enjoyed them both and tried to make a conscious effort to add more of her books to my reading list. I’ve been in a ‘beach’ read frame of mind this entire month, and this book certainly seemed to fit the bill- ergo- catching two fish with one worm. Letty Carnahan is in trouble. She’s on the run from New York City; she has her four-year-old niece, Maya in tow, and her sister was found dead in the entry hall of her glamorous townhome. Letty believes she knows who did it: her sister’s awful, money-grubbing ex-husband, Eli Wingfield.I’m not sure if the editing was to blame or if this was just a one-off for this well-loved author- but whatever the case, I’m still looking forward to her upcoming Christmas novel and have a few of her older titles on my summer reading list. They are running from authorities because she finds sister lying on a blood bath at her house as her little nice is scared and traumatized. Her sister Tanya warned her about her ex Evan who is biological father of Maya could harm her before and her predictions eventually come true. Letty keeps her promise she gave to her sister: she takes her niece and she runs away because the scumbag ex Evan might have killed her sister and now he’s coming after her! This book is very well thought out and the characters are all really well rounded and have great characterisation.

Thomas Hardy splits The Newcomer’s Wife into 5 stanzas, with each stanza measuring four lines. There is a continuous couplet rhyming system throughout the quatrains, with an AABB rhyme scheme. This sing-song rhyming, along with consistent meter along the lines propels the poem forward. You can imagine this tragicomic poem being chanted in a tavern. The neat rhyme scheme also means that when the poem does conclude, the ending is satisfying, both content-wise and aurally. Pee-pee,” Maya wailed, right on cue. The kid’s timing was flawless.
