About this deal

Dead of Winter: Build a compelling narrative of harsh survival, heroic collaboration, and devastating betrayal. Get it? Zombies will never … yes, Dear Reader, I see you shaking your head. Let’s move on, shall we? If they pass on a turn, it doesn’t stop them from choosing to increase their bid as it comes around to them again. One thing I really love is you can collect items and “friends” along your way and they may give you a positive benefit or negative effect depending on the route you take. For instance, there is a kid who can join your gang who may, down the line, blow a load of zombies up for you with a home-made bomb, or conversely he may steal your resources!

Earlier this week we posted our first zombie game review – Dead of Winter. In that review, we made it clear we’re not zombie fans. Yet, here we are a few days later reviewing another zombie-themed board game. Of course, if a player doesn’t survive until the end of the game, the cards they’ve gained won’t matter at all. The game is best with four players: it makes the auction more interesting, and it is fun when somebody must go down each of those four paths. At that player count the game takes about 45 minutes. Sure, Hit Z Road has player elimination, but for such a short and simple game, I don’t see that as much of a problem. On a player’s turn, they must choose one of the remaining paths. A path consists of a pair of cards in a row. The player first has an encounter with the card on the left and then follows to the card on the right. 5 zombies to fight to get past this first card! Despite the scary artwork (my daughters are too frightened of it to play this game), the whole game takes a slightly amusing and ironic look at the situation with most of the location cards containing humorous comments scribbled onto the pictures. Name a popular gaming theme, and chances are there's a Tiny Epic version of it. Tiny Epic Zombies recreate the classic mall survival scenario, with locations, weapons, heroes and meeples squeezed into the series’ signature tiny box. The auction only ends once all players pass in a row. Then each player pays for their bid using any combination of their resources. (A player can’t bid on a higher amount than they have resources to pay.) Like a good tabletop RPG, Zombicide is highly expandable and moddable. The original base game features ten scenarios. Over the eight years since its initial release, Zombicide has received multiple expansions, sequels and spin-offs - including a medieval fantasy plague and mutated space zombies. With a new second edition of the base game featuring 25 scenarios launching later this year, as well as a fully-fledged RPG spin-off on the way, it's never been a better time to go zombie-hunting.

Hit Z Road offers a starkly different gameplay experience compared to most zombie games. Every round players bid on which route they wish to take from a selection of cards that have much-needed resources - and oft-avoided zombie hordes. Ammo can be used to shoot zombies with little risk, while adrenaline is needed to avoid getting your passengers killed in the middle of a big fight. Zombies remain one of the big icons of horror - especially action horror - but that doesn't mean they have to be limited to just films and TV. In fact, there's plenty of zombie board games out there to bring the ravenous horde to your tabletop, either with you trying to survive, escape, bring down or even control the undead themselves. With that in mind, we've outlined the best zombie board games below, to bring a little more mortality to your games night. Best zombie board games I liked Hit Z Road. I was originally concerned about the theme; however, this game, while dripping with theme in terms of the components, it is really an auction game with dice rolling used to resolve encounters.

Best zombie board games

I enjoy solo variants of board games so it was nice having an official solo game included in the rule book. Although the solo version doesn’t capture the tension of the Auction Phase, it does retain the flavor of the Encounter phase as you make your way through the game before ranking your performance based on a scoring chart. It’s a good way to get your zombie on when your time and available opponents are limited. I know our youngest child is now a teenager, but I can’t imagine pulling this out to play with younger kids. Our neighbors and friends still have kids in the younger age range and I can’t imagine playing it with them. For starters, I wouldn’t want them to be disturbed seeing some of the card images. Whatever flavour of zombie game you're into, they all require loaded guns, steeled nerves, and juicy brains. I’m sure you’ve heard the popular saying when trying to outrun a bear, “You don’t have to be faster than the bear, you just have to be faster than the other guy.” The highest bidder will get the first initiative tile, second highest will get the second initiative tile, etc.
