Description

A delightful, perceptive celebration of that decade's chartbusters which the canon tends to ignore. A splendid, overdue rehabiltation for the era's junkshop geniuses. **** " Record Collector BFI | Film & TV Database | GIVE US A CLUE[17/11/80] (1980)". Archived from the original on 26 January 2009 . Retrieved 11 January 2023. Given the volume of episodes on offer, I think it is justified there aren’t any special features in this set. The only bonus on offer is that every episode comes with subtitles; Making this show more accessible than ever before. Conclusion In 1983, Michael Parkinson, no longer the king of chat, took over as host, presiding rather like a headmaster over unruly 4th formers. If to do were as easy as to know what were good to do, chapels had been churches, and poor men's cottages princes' palaces.

It actually turned out to be a favourite episode overall, with Chris Biggins's turns including The Ideal Gnome Exhibition and Rumpelstiltskin. Give Us a Clue is a British televised game show version of charades which was broadcast on ITV from 1979 to 1992. The original host was Michael Aspel from 1979 to 1984, followed by Michael Parkinson from 1984 to 1992. The show featured two teams, one captained by Lionel Blair and the other by Una Stubbs. Later versions of the programme had Liza Goddard as captain of the women's team. Norman Vaughan stood in for Blair for four episodes in the second series and Joyce Blair stood in for Stubbs for the 1981 Royal Wedding special. Originally, each team consisted of the captain, two celebrities and one non-celebrity. The non-celebrity participation was dropped and another celebrity was added in their place. On one infamous edition of the programme, the male non-celebrity was handed the title he had to mime on a card by host Michael Aspel, but, rather than read the title, he read the wrong side of the card, on which his name was printed. He thus mimed his name to his teammates. Lionel Blair later wrote this incident led to the dropping of non-celebrity participants. [1] Alan Braden's theme from the daytime version is my earworm of the moment. It's playing almost constantly in my head, which has kept me buoyant through work days and chores, until I can get my next fix. The more I listen to the lyrics, the more I think they're actually very clever as well as very catchy, and makes a perfect theme as it's unforgettable. There are some strong individual singing performances, especially from the impressive Lyn Paul as Jessie, who explores her own anxieties as an older woman faced with undressing for such a noble and worthy cause.“ ( Tony Clarke, Stagetalk Magazine, 27th September 2023) The whole "downstream" thing sounds like nonsense to me as the CSS encryption still needs to be decrypted. For a software DVD player, the producer of the software needs to have a decryption key (that needs to be bought and licensed from the DVD forum) before it can decrypt the DVD. With there being only a handful of episodes available I'm already at Series Thirteen from 1987 which appears to be the first with Michael Parkinson and Liza Goddard replacing Aspel and Una. And probably the first transmitted during the daytime: the team captains now say "and on my team today" instead of "tonight".As far as I know, there is NO way that a DVD drive on its own can decrypt the DVD -- otherwise, it would be pointless to have CSS encryption in the first place. Retrieved 11 January 2023.The more modern BBC re-make with Tim Clark tried to introduce a lateral thinking puzzle (which he could "give clues to") but it didn't really fit in with the rest of the show. Regardless of whoever the host was, cheating and favouritism by the host towards the women's team abounded. I've just watched one of the most tense episodes in terms of points-angst, with Lionel's team not scoring a single point in the first half and getting thrashed overall. There was some redemption in Part Two with first-time player William Boyde nailing his performance of the appropriately-titled Shame And Scandal In The Family and winning Lionel's favour. In defence of the men's team, Derek Griffiths and Martin Jarvis were both lovely as well. The team just seemed less experienced overall than Liza's team (which was 75% old hands) and the male guests missed a lot of the simple shorthands given to them by Lionel during his turn. His frustration at trying to rally them was tangible.
