About this deal

Like the DD500X, the DD350X maxes out at the ½ inch bit size. It is also further limited in that it has a set angle grind, it can only sharpen at a 118-degree angle. The bits are nearly impossible to photograph, but to show the difference in the points, only one of these bits wasn’t sharpened. The second from the left remained untouched, while the first bit on the left was sharpened to 135 degrees, and the right two to 118 degrees. The ability to control how much product you remove is important as well since removing too much at a time shortens the life of the bits as well. For those who use bits on a regular basis, this is a great way to extend the life of their bits and improve the quality of the holes they drill. As long as you can give the system the time to get the steps down right, you’ll be happy with the increase in performance in both your bits and your drill. Drill Doctor 750X Review Value There are more types of drill bit sharpeners than you might think. Some are more useful than others, depending on your specific bits and experience level. Make sure you’re choosing the best one for you. Here’s what to look for: You want to do this an even number of times so each flute is sharpened equally. The number of turns required depends a great deal on the size of the bit. According to the owner’s manual, a 3/32-inch bit may take 2-4 half-turns while a 3/8-inch bit might take 16-20 half-turns. It’s easy and takes very little time. The DrillDoctor DD500X can sharpen drill bits at either the 118-degree angle or 135. The ability to add a split-tip to 135-degree bits also makes them more useful for a wider variety of tasks.

Sure, the process is self-contained so you aren’t likely to see little metal shavings flying all over the place, but you should think about how much time you are willing to put into learning and experimenting with these machines before you decide which one you want to buy. Drill Doctor does note that you may get more uses, but you’ll see declining performance if you push the 200-use limit too far. Compatible Drill Bit Materials Both models of Drill Doctor can create split point bits, even out of single-point bits. They can also re-sharpen the split point bits that are starting to go dull. We’ll talk about the similarities and differences between these two machines, what you can expect to arrive in the box with the sharpener, some pros, and cons of each option, and give a solid recommendation as to which sharpener we think is the best deal. The Drill Doctor is a unique tool, meant to really give bits a sharp, good as new finish. The ability to achieve a perfect angle without a whole lot of hassle is an impressive feat. With a wide range of materials that can be used with it and a huge range of bit sizes that it can accommodate, it is a huge asset to a busy shop. While there is a learning curve, it’s simple once you’ve gotten the process down. Breathing new life into bits makes them perform like new as well as taking strain off your drill. REVIEW OVERVIEW Although both machines are similar in appearance, the DD500X’s simplicity means it is also less intimidating for new users or for workshops that focus on training. It’s easy to replace drill bits as you break them. Most workshops keep several in each size and material specifically because bits are easily broken. They also just wear down over time, becoming dull as well as brittle. There really is only one difference in terms of included features between the two models, the DD750X comes with a bag for transporting the tool from place to place. If you want a transport bag for the Drill Doctor DD500X you need to buy it separately.

Thinking about all that needs to be in place for a proper drill bit, its amazing you can even sharpen one. The Drill Doctor has taken away all of the guessing game. Their system is great and very easy to use. You don’t have to worry about the chisel point being proper, the cutting edges being just right or anything else. The Drill Doctor takes care of all this for you. All you have to do is set the bit and rotate. Everything else is left up to the Drill Doctor. However, the Drill Doctor DD750X has many more options than the DD500X’s two angles. It’s cutting wheel can be set at any angle between 115 degrees and 140 degrees, which allows you to use and sharpen non-standard bits. Adjustable material take-off: Allows the user to change the amount of material removed during sharpening to further extend the life of your bits This model is significantly more expensive than a Drill Doctor or the other competitors we’ve mentioned. This article will look at two of the best drill bit sharpeners on the market, the Drill Doctor DD500X and the Drill Doctor DD750X.One note for customers in Australia, you will need an outlet converter to use Drill Doctor product, plugging it directly into a non-standard outlet is one of the few things that will void the Drill Doctor warranty. Replaceable Diamond Sharpening Wheel, 180 or 100 Grit Options Adjustable material take-off: Allows user to change the amount of material removed during sharpening to further extend the life of your bits

One note on the video. We were going to show a third bit that we sharpened with the Drill Doctor, but Youtube only allows 10 minutes of play, so we had to cut that out. As you can see with the first bit we sharpened, it might as well have been broken. We took that bit to a grinder and made the bottom as flat as possible. The diamond grinding wheel is capable of sharpening bits made out of carbon steel, HSS, cobalt and carbide. It will not sharpen brad point bits. However, that investment can be worth it in a professional setting since you only need the one tool to sharpen any bladed tools you’re working with. The standard sharpening port also uses a unique design where you rotate the bit over the wheel to sharpen the bit. The port is slightly oval shape, allowing for perfect sharpening on the bit wings.totally pissed-off. I have replaced the grinding cylinder thinking that may be the problem to no avail. upon closer inspection, found the motor shaft has side-play in it. aprox 2 to 5 thousands of an inch and what even surprised me more the motor only has bushing in it no bearings which says heaps about the machine, Not meant to last at all, no wonder they sell millions of them. Now the machine Was brand new up until a few days ago. In my opinion cost of manufacture would be very little compared to what we pay. I live in Australia and it seems to me, in America,, Greed Is Good., hence send out a third rate product and make the max profit. Isn’t capitalism great, Make money at all cost and don’t give a damm about ripping people off. High-quality drill bits aren’t cheap. And once they become dull, they’re ineffective and more likely to “walk” around and damage your workpiece. However, if you regularly work with reversed drill bits, this accessory will help you extend the working life of those bits just like you would with a regular bit. Replacement Parts

The top of the line 750X sharpens drill bits from 3/32” to 3/4”. Point angles can be set anywhere from 115 to 140 degrees. Adjustable material take-off allows you to adjust the amount of material removed during sharpening - extending the life of your bits. The 750X is built to stand up to professional use. It did not take much practice before I learned how to sharpen and split the point of a drill bit in less than two minutes. The 100-grit option still needs replacement after approximately 200 uses, just like the finer 180-grit standard wheel. One word of caution for the DrillDoctor’s sharpening power is that they will remove the protective coating from the tip of your drill bit (but not the shaft) on coated bits. The ability to create split points should be especially valuable for any fine-grain wood project as split point bits help to prevent damage to the wood outside the drilled area from ‘walking’ as you start to drill. Believe it or not, sharpening a bit is very precise and needs to be. Again, an improper drill bit that is not sharpened correctly will cause more wear and tear on your drill. Say you have a dull drill bit and part of the drill bit material is covering up a portion of the flute. If part of the flute is covered up, then the material you are drilling into will not be able to be brought to the top of your work and the hole will not be cleaned out while you are drilling. So in essence you will not only be cutting the hole you are drilling into, you will also have material that was cut sitting in the hole which will cause more friction and forces the drill to cut that material over and over. As we said, there is a lot to sharpening a drill bit. The chisel point, which is the center point on the tip of the drill bit, must be perfectly centered. The angle between the chisel point and the cutting edge must be proper for each application. You must also have a proper downward angle away from the cutting edge. The 750X and 700 are also the only models that come with a carrying case, although you can buy one for the other models as an accessory. The main reason you would want to invest in the Drill Doctor is something you don’t see and that is to prolong the life of your drill. Just as a good chefs will sharpen their knifes, you should sharpen your drill bits before each major project. Besides a dull bit producing poor quality work, a dull bit will cause more wear and tear on your drills. You have to remember a drill is only a power tool that creates power and spins the bit. The bit is what actually does the cutting. A dull bit takes more power and work to make a cut than a sharp bit. If your drill is requiring more power, that means it creates more work and more heat for your drill. Now I am not saying if you use a drill bit one time, your drill is going to clunk out on you, but over time it does have an effect. It is very important to maintain sharp bits, just as it is important to maintain sharp saw blades when cutting wood.
