About this deal

As the couple at the lighthouse are drawn into an increasingly tragic set of consequences, these remote, strange lives are rendered immediate and familiar.

Women were taught to put their husbands needs before their own to keep their husbands comfortable and happy.

Her father disinherited her, she had to work menial labor, she had to suffer a lot to marry the love of her life. As the years unfolded, their decision would see many lives affected, with an extremely devastating result. The third person narration is used masterfully, there are no unreliable narrators, we get to know the inner thoughts, feelings and history of most characters. Deeply in love with each other and with their life on the island, they soon try to start a family with no success.

Yes, a very emotional book and at the same time, you often experience a feeling of calm and peace when the life on Janus is described. The keeper Tom replaced on Janus was Trimble Docherty, who had caused a stir by reporting that his wife was signaling to passing ships by stringing up messages in the colored flags of the International Code. And now her husband may be dead somewhere, she doesn't know ( because Batshit and Doormat never reported the dead body) and her daughter may be dead somewhere, she doesn't know ( because Batshit and Doormat never reported FINDING A FUCKING BABY). It's about a good man who is a vet who tries to do the right thing, plagued by what he saw and did during the war.As Tom begins his shift on Janus Rock, he finds comfort in the regulated structure and simple life of a keeper. If you can remember that long-ago feeling of attachment to a parent, or if you have a child, or if you have longed for a child of your own, your heart will break for little Lucy. One day a row boat with a dead man and a very live baby washes ashore, 2 weeks after the 3rd miscarriage. Every aspect of it served a purpose, and in dissecting the whole setup, a lot more pour out than just the emotionally-potent plot.

Tom, whose records as a lighthouse keeper are meticulous and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But one fateful, April morning she hears the sound of cries carried in on the wind: a small boat has washed ashore, its occupants a dead man and a squalling baby girl. The first thing that drew me to this novel was the beautiful cover and I am happy to report that this book has more to it than just a pretty picture. She's never been on Janus Island where Tom is a lightkeeper, but she's not afraid to live life in isolation. People made lots of babies without much available in the way of birth control, thus there not being much need to focus on anything which curtailed the population.

When after three years and as many miscarriages his wife hears a baby's cry and discovers a dead man and a baby in a washed up dinghy, she feels her prayers have been answered. As he rolled the stamp back and forth across the inkpad he said, “Welcome”—he thumped it down in three places on the paper—“to the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service. As if to make amends, the island – Janus Rock – offered a lighthouse, its beam providing a mantle of safety for thirty miles. Isabel Graysmark is young, extroverted, beautiful and knows what she wants: she wants to marry Tom and live with him on the island of the lighthouse.

Naqueles casos standard, batidos e estereotipados a mente é quanto basta — compara-os com os seus semelhantes arquivados, fixa-lhes uma etiqueta e espeta com eles na divisória correspondente — Certos dum lado e Errados do outro. Given the moral choices that form the heart of the plot, this could have been a much better book, if it were, you know, well-written. Apparently, this is not what Isabel thinks love is, so this makes her the villain of the story in my perspective. The Light Between Oceans is one of those stories that perfects the whole, ‘what would I have done differently’ notion. Though the music was tuneful, it failed to comfort him as he climbed the stairs of the light, fending off a strange uneasiness at the concession he had made.
