About this deal

Somewhere in the depths of his consciousness was a memory clawing its way to the surface, tormenting him, refusing to let him rest. I’ve been amazed at and chuckled over the neuroses in the animal world: I’ve met a pig who thought he was a horse; a cow who stuttered; a bull who was bullied by a shrew he shared a field with; a duckling who thought he was ugly (and he was); a goat who thought he was Jesus; a woodpigeon who was afraid of flying (he preferred to walk everywhere); a toad who could croak Shakespeare sonnets (and little else); an adder who kept trying to stand up; a fox who was vegetarian; and a grouse who never stopped. Whilst I wasn’t overly happy with the way it ended – I had wanted a lot more action – I found I enjoyed it a lot more than I imagined I would enjoy such an ending. For the first half of the novel, the various adventures that Fluke finds himself within are both exciting and heart-warming, as well as enabling Herbert to really build upon the characterisation of Fluke.

As he grow some of these recollections become more vivid and he goes looking for the life he left behind that he cannot quite remember. On top of this Miss Birdle has a bit of a viscious streak and occasionally metes out a swift kick at Fluke for no apparent reason or locks him in a room for days. Fluke is also accepted by Rumbo’s owner, a scrap-metal merchant, who only feeds them occasionally so they have to fend for themselves most of the time. Naturally curious, intelligent and formidable, the sisters decide to become ‘detectors’ and discover what happened to Elizabeth Chester. First published back in 1977, British author James Herbert’s forth novel entitled ‘Fluke’ was a dramatic departure from his previous three incredibly successful and well–received horror novels.

Will you go insane if each of the sights that you encounter for the first time through your new eyes – or the dog’s eyes – feel maddeningly familiar?

Its an easy read and I always find that if I have another chance, maybe a dog would not be a bad place to start. I’d go so far as to say that this is the weakest of all of the James Herbert novels that I’ve read so far, which is a little bit of a shame. That’s the real story as Fluke sets out to discover the answer: who he once was, who he has become now, and why.Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). In fact, I found it quite eye opening and it strengthened some of the points that I think this book was trying to make. I don’t know at what age dogs become sexually active but a large section of the book is when he’s still a pup.

A paperback edition of a horror novel published simultaneously in hardback, which follows a mongrel as he wanders the streets of the city, tormented by a memory deep in his consciousness that he had once been a man.I guess you could say it goes from 'gnaws to paws' and who knows, perhaps this is really what happens!
