The Infinity Gauntlet Omnibus starts out reprinting the events previously assembled in Silver Surfer: Rebirth of Thanos, the limited Thanos Quest, and a few more Silver Surfer episodes to appropriately set the stage for the actual Infinity Gauntlet mini-series.

The Infinity Gauntlet was interesting and was a page turner until I finished the Infinity Gauntlet subsection. The omnibus then gives us 26 tie in issues of various comics that take place during the Infinity Gauntlet.This has the main story, the Thanos Quest (which is very good and imperative to how Thanos gets the gauntlet) and a ton of Silver Surfer to start. Death has released Thanos from her cold embrace, and he plans to repay her by murdering half the universe! The last few hundred pages contained some one shots where were good and then some aftermath issues which were good or mediocre.

It was the time when characters still used thought balloons and used to narrate the obvious for reader's convenience. While I feel like the main series works if you read it alone, I recommend reading all of SS and the Warlock issues leading up to it. We see lots of The Silver Surfer, Doctor Strange, The Hulk from Peter David which i never read before but does look good, Drax The Destroyer, Galactus, Doctor Doom, Adam Warlock and every mayor player in the Marvel Universe. It'll tell us "these events happen in between issues 2 and 3 of The Infinity Gauntlet" or "This issue takes place during issue 4 of The Infinity Gauntlet". I read the trade which just collects the main series, issues 1-6, but this time around, I read all the Silver Surfer comics and a lot of Warlock comics leading into this.Of course, the Marvel universe isn't going to sit by and let Thanos wield that much power, so they unite to battle him. Then, when the Marvel Universe teams up to take on Thanos, we get a lot of waiting, while Adam Warlock plans and waits until just the right minute to set things into motion. I also liked the snapshots I got of other Marvel characters; this allowed me to round-out my knowledge a bit while also pointing me in a direction for other possible comics to read. Definitely came away feeling like I have a much better understanding of Thanos and impressed with some of the best writing of the Silver Surfer I've seen.

But then the ending of Thanos winning by not being all-powerful, and how Adam Warlock would ultimately suffer because of it was a rather poignant theme. Reading all their stuff gave me a better understanding of the characters and made the story hit harder.Death and suicide are recurring themes in Starlin's work: Personifications of Death appeared in his Captain Marvel series and in a fill-in story for Ghost Rider; Warlock commits suicide by killing his future self; and suicide is a theme in a story he plotted and drew for The Rampaging Hulk magazine.

The second half of the omnibus dealing with a multitude of stories that occur during the Infinity Gauntlet serials ranged from a fun read to a tedious trek. I hadn’t read this comic since I was really young, and I wanted to brush up on all of the post-snap details so I can make my predictions for Avengers 4 next year. The mystical nature of the character meshed nicely with the space faring cosmic characters (something I did not actually expect. The art is retro and incredible (Especially in the limited series Thanos quest) and the dialogs are super tacky. The main plot for the Infinity Gauntlet event is pretty bad ass, although it does lean on the side of being too much.As a product of its time, the main event is very strong, offering both a stellar cosmic storyline and a fun look at the Marvel heroes of the '90s and the universe's cosmic entities. For one, it means that these comics are the greatest canvas imaginable for those two most inspiring words in the English language: what if?
