The only true intimacy in the book occurs between the men, after all, and to ignore that fact is to ignore one of key components of why The Lord of the Rings is so emotionally satisfying, especially to young men. Now twenty, I knew that my foggy memories of that first attempt to read Fellowship were now seven years old, and so I simply started at the beginning.The ring out of the box looks and feels like a quality piece of engineering and stylish piece of jewellery. In the good old times, it was clear which was the team to promote, but meanwhile, it has become a tricky, ethical dilemma with far too many implications, innuendos, and stuff. No problem, you will also find Arwen's ring from "Lord of the Rings", (the 'Evening Star') here as well. Aided by his gardener Samwise Gamgee and the mysterious wizard Gandalf the Grey, he takes the ring on a journey to Rivendell, a hidden refuge of the Elves.

Here we see History catch up with the Idyllic and somewhat isolated Shire where violence (the sad, pathetic revenge of Saruman on Bilbo and Frodo for having thwarted his plans) rages across the land, nature is destroyed, and industrialization arises.

My copy, a tall trilogy of hardcovers that I still find a little awkward to hold when reading even as a more-or-less adult, was taken out several weekends in a row, and a genuine attempt was made to understand what was going on.
