About this deal

Now it is time for Lizzie and Belle to put their sleuthing skills to the ultimate test, following a trail of thefts, kidnappings and even poisonings that haunts the twisting London streets. This is a four-session Spelling Seed for the book The Lizzie and Belle Mysteries: Drama and Danger by J T Williams. The representation was good, especially for a younger audience to read about and I liked the characters and story. It is very interesting reading their letters to one another as it portrays their friendship in a way that description couldn’t, and I imagine that the author took time to ensure that the wording of the letters was perfect and even the font that she used resembles the characters in a very clear way. Her debut short story appeared in The Very Merry Murder Club, edited by Robin Stevens and Serena Patel.

It’s a fantastic portrayal of life in England in the past, the fight against slavery and the Parliamentary processes to try and stop it. Many things happen at once, yet it is still possible to take time to enjoy the story and focus on the attempted murders and the murderer themself. But no, Lizzie’s father is a famous actor: he has the lead role in the play that nearly ends his life. The second id the theatre, where the crime happens, and is therefore the main place of investigation. It was great to read a historical novel for children where the main characters aren't white and middle class and the mystery/detective aspect made it really pacey and engaging. The next day Lizzie set off for the Kenwood house, the residence of Belle, where she lived with her Uncle and Aunt.

Set in 1700s London, Lizzie and Belle meet unexpectedly but find they both have inquisitive minds and love solving mysteries so when Lizzie's Dad (the first black man to take to the stage in Othello) narrowly survives an attempt on his life, the girls are determined to investigate, despite all of the ways society and other people try to stop them. The second book in the thrilling middle grade mystery series, perfect for fans of Robin Steven’s Murder Most Unladylike. As Lizzie is the one writing the book, we don’t get much description of her apart from the illustrations. My favourite moment in the story was very close to the end, when the mischievous duo tricked their enemy! And when their eyes meet in the audience of the Drury Lane theatre one night, both girls are sure they’ve seen something suspicious on stage.
