About this deal

This week, the World Photography Organization announced the shortlist for Student and Youth Photographer of The Year, part of the broader Sony World Photography Awards of 2024.

Fujifilm's flagship premium compact camera has some amazing new features; including a newly designed 23mm F/2 lens, an improved Hybrid Viewfinder, tilting rear touchscreen LCD monitor and weather resistant design. It's a fine addition to the brand's venerated X100 series, so let's take a closer look at all this buzz.

com/the-photographers-blog/x100v-hype many people want this camera because of the recent hype received from Instagram. The X100V looks just as good in the hand as it does in pictures – it’s expensive, but feels very premium.

The only thing companies respond to is money and variables they may cause them lose money or gain it. A tilting screen may make you feel slightly more nervous about its durability when chucked into a backpack, but we didn’t encounter any worrying incidents on this front.

But part of the hype is of course related to the exclusivity and that it's difficult to get hold of. Built-in neutral density filter, present in all X100-series cameras, is now four stops rather than three. but many just snap and share it on instagram/whatsapp/whatever and only use a downsampled image viewed on a small screen.

This sits so flush to the back of the camera that it’s easy to miss that you can pull it up by 90 degrees and down by around 30 degrees. No more "Lens Modulation Optimizer" settings in the menu system; the Lens Modulation Optimizer is always active. As an owner, you do have to be a tad cautious with how you use it, especially when it starts raining. In the real world, this equated to almost exactly five hours of fairly intense street shooting during our tests.

It's a small body so slow heat dissipation is understandable, but being indoors in an AC environment and still having heat issues, just won't work for me. Instead, it’s the ideal walkaround camera for keen photographers who see that 23mm f/2 lens as liberating rather than a frustrating limitation.

Although, it's definitely not going to fit into a jeans pocket, forcing you to carry a bag to lug it around with you. You can see an electronic preview of the scene in the bottom right corner, while still framing the image using the OVF.What made them particularly handy was the fact that you could use them while looking through the viewfinder. However having owned both xtrans and bayer sensored x100s it's hard to tell the difference in everyday use. it now comes with tilting (which otherwise sits neatly flushed against the frame) and it's a touchscreen.
