Winter 1461 – Richard Duke of York is dead, his ambitions in ruins, his head spiked on the walls of York city. Part One deals with Derry Brewer’s political machinations initiated on Henry’s behalf with the aim of bringing about a lasting truce with France. In the author's notes, Iggulden admits playing gobsmackingly fast and loose with history towards the end of the novel. So who better to reveal the dynastic murderous feuds than the man who brought the Mongol and Roman empires to life? His writing style is accomplished yet accessible and he manages to bring the past tantalisingly to life. This is around the sixth book I have read by this author and it seems to me as if he is becoming even more readable.King Henry VI has remained all but exiled in Windsor Castle, struck down by illness for over a year. This battle was so pivotal in the evolution of the conflict that Iggulden goes into great detail to explain how the battle unfolded. He is married to Ella, who is from the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy, and whose family are craft pasta and ravioli producers in the region. A Fine SIGNED UK first edition, first printing hardback - in a fine unblemished and unclipped dustjacket - All my books are always securely packed with plenty of bubblewrap in professional boxes and promptly dispatched (within 2-3 days) - SIGNED BY CONN IGGULDEN via a tipped in page - Pictures of the book are available upon request. Iggulden just uses that knowledge to underpin his story but not get in the way of it as it tears through at a death or glory rate!

A NICE CLEAN AND TIGHT UK FIRST EDITION FIRST PRINT COPY OF STORMBIRD BY CONN IGGULDEN, WHICH CONN HAS VERY KINDLY SIGNED AND LINED AND PRE PUBLICATION DAY DATED TO THE TITLE PAGE.One thing I took from his previous two series, the Caesar led Emperor novels and the Mongol centred saga, was that his style felt very grand, detailed and rich in detail yet somehow a little detached from the action. This is a real shame as it breaks down what has always been a real strength of this series in the last little bit, which covers, arguably, some of English history’s most iconic moments in little over a hundred pages. This is the England of 1454 and the beginning of the period in English history that we know today as the Wars of the Roses.

Set during the Greco-Persian Wars, it features the Battle of Marathon and the Battle of Thermopylae. All of this leaving the way open for the reader to enjoy, be involved and interpret their own personal view of events. With England’s territories in France under threat, and rumours of revolt at home, fears grow that Henry and his advisers will see the country slide into ruin. The story is focused around families and politics during the reign of Henry who was said to have been a weak King, not only does he have a weak constitution he is very poor in health, he is also heavily influenced by his corrupt advisors. What is to follow is an very intriguing and marvellous tale of Kingship, power, loyalty, treachery and death, and in this circumstances King Henry VI must somehow seem to survive, and although supported by his very strong wife Queen Margaret, this King due to his ill health, he will feel the strain and hardships of being a King, resulting in his downfall. How is it that England could field fifty thousand men for the battle of Towton in 1461, but was able to send only four thousand to prevent the loss of Normandy a dozen years earlier? As nothing else this drives Edward to proclaim himself king, aided by his friend and mentor Warwick both of whom want nothing more than to defeat the killers of their fathers and retrieve their honour and heads. If you were a fan of Conn Iggulden’s first book in the “Wars of the Roses” series “Stormbird”, I strongly encourage you to read “Trinity”.

Look, I'm not a fantasy reader, but I've seen enough of it to recognise when "Lord Perucullion" and "Farmer Bingbat of Xanthripoum" enter the room dragging pet dragons behind them. It's a hopeless cause, of course, and it was interesting to see that little known part of the pre-Wars of the Roses period in a novel. Most authors are quick to dismiss de la Pole as an inept blunderer but it all looks very different from his point of view.

He leaves out real facts for invented 'dramatic turns of events' obscuring the actual reasons for why things played out as they did (= warping historical understanding for those who read to learn). What he sees makes the King’s decisions seem ever weaker and born from pure fear, ultimately, providing more reason to prefer the Yorkist leaders.
