About this deal

But while Alice has transitioned by the time she starts secondary school, it wasn’t until Dawson was a well-known author in her 30s (crowned Queen of Teen in a reader-led YA prize) that she felt ready to take the plunge, changing from James to Juno. Like with Akala, we find polemic, humour and careful referencing, frustration at the past and present and hopes for the future, but here, rather than race and class, we’re examining gender. At this club, a murderous Queen of Hearts (AKA Paisley Hart, poisonous ringleader of St Agnes girls’ school) rules over a trippy “court” of half-recognisable Carrollian archetypes. She grew up in West Yorkshire and worked for several years as a teacher, specialising in PSHCE, before becoming a journalist.

A great mix of Juno's experience transitioning from man to woman and her thoughts on gender issues and feminism. Davies Sarah Ridley Sarah Vaughan Sara Thielker Sara Ugolotti Sasha Alsberg Satu Hämeenaho-Fox Scott Bergstrom Scott Garrett Sebastien de Castell Seishi Yokomizo Serena Molloy Serena Patel Seren Boyd Sergei Medvedev Sergio Sismondo Serhii Plokhy Seymour Hersh Shane Hegarty Shannon Hale Shappi Khorsandi Sharon Cohen Sharon Davey Sheridan Stewart Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay Sif Sigmarsdóttir Simon Berthon Simon Brew Simone Douglas Simon Garnett Simon James Green Simon Lelic Simon Morden Simon Scarrow Simon Toyne Slavoj Žižek Solange Ouellet Sophie Anderson Sophie Hannah Soren Kenner Spike Milligan Sr.She knows she has had male privilege (though as a small, slight, gay man, not the full male privilege a straight or more imposing man would have) but uses that to interrogate the messages she was given and the female-orientated messages she could avoid. It's written with a great understanding of how gender effects people everyday; making you question the world around you. However, I knew nothing about Juno at this point and only when stumbling across this book (as I was very intrigued by the title), did I find out that Juno was a trans woman. What I liked about this book is that it's not just the personal story of Juno, but also her discovery of Feminism, Identity, Gender and much more.

I grew up in a council house near Bradford watching TV serials like Beverly Hills 90210 and, later on, Gossip Girl,” say s the 38-year-old. A highly topical look at the concept of gender, encouraging children to think for themselves about the issues involved. It is a deeply heartfelt and very candid autobiography about what it means to be a transgender woman in contemporary Great Britain. There's a whole load of mine-fields when it comes to political correctness and misconception over these topics, and Juno artfully describes her own experience with these, which was fascinating and eye-opening. She came out publicly in 2015 and, three years later, created her first transgender character: Kendall, a gentle anorexic, in what was to become her most successful novel, Clean.

You may continue to explore the site in this browser, but most interactive features will not work as expected. She make it plain she is wary of putting words into the mouths of trans people of colour or trans people with disabilities and mentions intersectionality and its special issues often. I really wanted to read this because I’ve seen and read so much about Juno Dawson online (and I think she may be one of the coolest people ever) and I have also been really eager to read more on the subject of gender and about the experiences of transgender people, like Juno.

Meat Market tackles the fashion trade, while Clean is set in an elite rehab centre, where a group of moneyed misfits grapple with the fallout from privileged lives, all very different from Dawson’s own childhood. In this book, Dawson details her thirty plus year journey to come to terms with being the woman she was meant to be, and also tackles the topic of the gender roles and stereotypes to which we are all subjected from the day we are born. I would definitely recommend this if you are interested in reading about feminism from a different perspective or am interested in trans issues. I learnt a lot about trans women and the LGBTQ+ community and it made me realize I don't really read/listen/watch many things related to the LGBTQ+ community and has made me interested to find more cultural things. The story feels its way around the differences between the male and female orgasm, and is unflinching in its approach to date rape – the bewildering moment when consent is breached.
