It teaches your child the phonetic sound of each letter and set of letter blends, which is vital for learning to read. The characters are engaging and they are learning without even knowing I bought this to help my grandchildren learn their letter sounds . At every stage the words are within the reach of children as they use their letter sound knowledge and tricky words already taught. I would recommend the jolly phonics cd (sing a long phonics) as a much more fun and effective learning aid. They love the characters and enjoy finding things on the page or wiggling their fingers whenever they think they have heard the sound.

We read the book each night before bed, go through the (well-explained) system to learn the sound and he is definitely picking it up. my daughter is hesitant to sound out and blend although she reads the words fine visually - but this book gets all the practice and learning in as part of a story and so she is more involved, and less resistant. Each spread has a number of words for reading and for spelling, along with the Jolly Phonics action. Because some of my mummy friends whose children were only 2 or 3 said that their child was already recognising alphabets and blending small words, I had been very keen to introduce phonics to my very clever son. I like that the book is hard cover and pages are thick, pictures vibrant (and relevant) even though the stories are very weird - My son hasn’t been interested in the book so far, but I am sure when he is ready he will get a lot out of this book.
