About this deal

I do not like this as much, as dust flies around inside the machine and has to change directions and to go out the other side. I'm trying to find an easy way to lighten these boards (essentially removing the dark stain) so that I can either go with a clear finish or, in trendy "Chip and Joanna Gaines" style, whitewash them keeping them very light with just a bit of natural wood/knots showing through. I would estimate that it takes at least double the amount of time to start reaping the benefits from the wire brush over what it takes to do a simple cleaning with the nylon wheel. I used the standard 100 grit nylon brush to clean reclaimed boards and it did a great job of removing the dirt.

The ideal solution for rustication processing that highlight the hardwood vein or to sand the surfaces of cupboard doors/details in solid wood and veneered or MDF panels. It does have provision for dust collection, but how effective it is compared to the Makita I don't know. It comes with a variety of easily-changed 3-inch drum attachments, a dust collection port, and a canvas carry bag. The evenly spaced striation of spring and summer wood of the rift grain makes the grain raising predictable, as opposed to face grain, where there are much larger patches of the dense summer wood that don't degrade like the spring wood, and therefore result in a more jarring transition between the boards. The technology to use those devices is much more complex (read: expensive), but you get what you pay for.Taking a chance on a machine that is double the cost of the QuickWood machine with only marginal similar results is just a huge waist of money and time. After using the machine and the wire wheel myself, I realize those reviewers were probably misusing the tool in some fashion, or were expecting it to function as some kind of portable sand blaster. They currently don't have a full 2 1/2" wire brush for it (only like 1/2" width) but the value was hard to pass up. Satin finishing machines, for example, ensure that the real structures of an untreated wood are worked out and the wood is thus given a natural surface look.

It took 20-25 minutes to brush the entire face with the wire wheel, working mostly long and occasionally cross grain, and applying significant pressure (not so much that my arms tired, though). which they recommend for removing rust from metal, and see if this leaves a surface comparable to the burnish produced by the wire brush, but for now, I'll probably continue usuing the wire brush for both grain raising and finishing purposes. I didn't time it, but I was only passing the brush over the same area 3 or 4 times, and we're talking quick passes, not a slow creep.
