About this deal

Author-illustrator Heena Baek won the 2020 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, and this is the first of her books to be published in English.

Read the note at the very beginning of the book (which could also start a good discussion with kids before reading) to make sense of the ending. On a very hot summer evening, when nothing seems to work to keep a group of neighbors cool, the moon starts melting. Not particularly persuasive, but this might coax a few young porkers to get their trotters into the tub.And this summer, I read Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr, which might be one of the best books I’ve read in a long time! One classroom used Moon Pops to teach the structure of an LE book project, work that will begin soon. She said the book “aligns really well with Montessori principles” and suggested it may be a good book to guide a parent discussion. This would make a great classroom read for young elementary school children learning about folklore from around the world.

I would strongly recommend having a good supply of yummy frozen treats to eat after you finish reading the story. On an evening so swelteringly hot the moon melts from the sky, Granny catches the moon drops and makes frozen treats that draw in the neighbors for relief. And my colleague Mary recommends Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin – A book about creativity, friendship set against the world of gaming. I loved the characterization of Granny as someone who can solve any problem, whether it is the heat or the loss of the rabbits’ home on the moon.

Illustrated in otherworldly mixed-media dioramas, this quirky and colorful picture book spins a new story from the common East Asian fable of the rabbit in the moon. Perfect for a bedtime story on a hot summer night, this entertaining tale offers much to be discovered on multiple readings; a strong title to share widely at story hours. On a simmering summer night, everyone in the apartment complex is doing everything they can to cool down. For the younger children, they could have activities with how the characters feel and what would make them feel that way. A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum is very interesting story about three generations of Palestinian women, the younger ones now living in modern day Brooklyn, NY.

I thought it was interesting that the story glossed over the fact that this is a folktale to explain the cycles of the moon, and I would love to discover why Baek made that choice. All is finally quiet, until two rabbits come knocking at the door—they have come from the moon, which has melted away. The entire book is marvelously crafted with a languid slowness of the heat at first and then the drama of the melting moon. Based on the Korean fable of the moon rabbit, the tale takes place in a multistory apartment building at night. I loved Doerr’s earlier novel, All the Light We Cannot See, but had not gravitated to this one – until now. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. A strange and delightful tale made for lingering over--and perfect for reading with your own moon pop . At first unsure what do with the drops, she is soon inspired to turn them into popsicles--moon pops! That’s when the two moon rabbits showed up and Granny had to figure out how to rebuild their moon home using the last drops of the moon.

The moon is melting, but Granny saves the day in this picture book originally published in South Korea and translated into English by Jieun Kiaer. The story of a hot night, a melting moon, and an ingenious way to cool down, it’s the perfect summer story. Vanessa, an LE teacher, is reading The Wisdom Wheel by Alberto Villolda and re-reading Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain. One of the grannies struggling with the heat decides to make ice pops out of the melting moon, but while that does keep everyone cool, it leaves the rabbits from the moon homeless.
