The HDR/DV is MUCH better at dealing with oranges and reds (just look at the fireball at the beginning of chapter 12. Combining this with the new black level, which is rich and deep with magnificent shadow depth, and highlights in the white scale that pop the image out, and you have a picture that is stunning. The black of course are improved which helps contrast with the colors to give them a bit more luster.

Dawn of the Dead on 4K UHD sits in a black amaray case alongside two 1080p Blu-rays containing both the theatrical and unrated versions. You get three versions of the movie in 4K gloriousness, so crispy and beautiful, absolutely crystal clear and no specks. By the third act, Dawn of the Dead takes from videogames in their worst ways, using propane tanks multiple times like grenades to take down the horde. As much action and carnage as 300, but with a great cast of characters that actually play well off of each other. The 4K SDR presentation of the Argento cut – complete with 'Zombi' onscreen title – makes for an interesting comparison. Green army fatigues, the yellow trim on the helicopter, the purplish skin of the undead – it all looks wonderful. Because Dawn of the Dead has been released so many times in many different territories on Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-ray, and recently on Ultra HD, it would likely have been nigh impossible for Second Sight to gather together every single piece of bonus material out there.

Ana is naturally the center of attention, and Sarah Polley is above reproach for playing the terrified, but hardened nurse who does what needs to be done, yest still exercises her conscience. Instead, it dovetails with the wide colour presentation to
really emphasise Romero's diverse palette. The old Blu-ray always crushed like crazy with black levels, but here you can actually see all of the details that you were missing in those dark spots. As is the case with the other cuts, optional subtitles are available in English for the Hard of Hearing.Facial features and textures are discernible from any given distance in the from showcasing freckles, wrinkles, dried blood, bruising, blemishes, make-up, zombie face and more with ease. Bullets hit with great impact, and the shotgun that Ving Rhames carries sounds like a veritable howitzer cannon. But whereas Dawn was instantly popular upon release, and has been a mainstay within the horror genre ever since, Day has had a long, slow crawl out of the grave it was buried in when it failed upon its initial release. When her young daughter is turned into a zombie and attacks her father, Ana just manages to escape, only to realize her entire Milwaukee neighborhood has been overrun by the walking dead. Their only hope is a daring exodus to a remote island they believe to be safe from the flesh-eating fiends.

As is to be expected from a vintage source and small production such as this, all three come with their share of soft, blurry moments, with the Cannes extended cut and Argento's version seeming a bit more apparent. Teal becomes dominate once settled in the mall, driving the color to a strict, almost monochrome tone indoors. It’s a clean, sharp image with mild speckling here and there, though some of the CGI-based visual effects don’t hold up in higher quality. The 4K UHD disc is nothing short of superb in the video department, handily outclassing the Blu-ray, and while it recycles the same 5. The overall UHD package is highly recommended for hardened fans and makes for an awesome addition to the 4K library. The exaggerated red blood looks astonishingly yucky, while neon signs within the mall have a fresh luminosity. Secondary hues, likewise, are more full-bodied and varied, particularly the cheerful yellows, warm marigolds, rich oranges and the hearty tan browns.
