About this deal

The section looks like it could be painful to grip but the pen is light and does not require a tight hold to control it.

The one thing I wonder about is the clip - why on earth does the thing even have a clip, I can't imagine where it can be useful with this size.Line width variance was pleasingly simple – a slight turn of the nib produced a noticeable change in stroke size and I’m looking forward to putting the Art Pen through its paces on a larger test piece. It doesn't seem bothered what diet of ink it is fed, it just lays down ink reliably, never remember it either skipping or flooding. But since the ink is fast drying and waterproof, there is a chance that it will eventually clog the channel of the pen. When drawing, I look for a pen that has a smooth and reliable ink flow, preferably no leakage (leading to unwanted blobs on the paper) and that’s comfortable to hold for long periods. The only thing I don't like so much is that you can't place the cap atop the pen whilst using it - I will probably lose it at some point, but oh well.

Too thin for big fingers, too long to be taken seriously, there really is no need, even for an art pen to be so long. So this pen has a wider channel (the slit in the feed) than other pens so there is less chance of ink getting stuck while in the pen. Again, I suspect this was to model the pen on dip pens or quills but that main body of the pen (the bit you hold) is a comfortable 10mm in diameter so it’s wide enough where it matters.

As you would expect of Lyra, the art pen is an excellent andversatile addition to any artists range. Suddenly, I want to explore hatching and filling everything with these crisp thin lines, slowly building up a texture made of lines as I fill a page. I plan to try out some noodlers inks and in need of pens to try it with these pens have been earmarked for "sacrifice". The only downside I have found so far, is that the nib isn't as fine as you may expect - tested against Rotring fineliners, the line width is somewhere in the range of . I wasn’t sure that I’d like the length of it but once I was working with the pen, I forgot all about it.

With nostalgia, with reliability, with the fact it has never let me down, despite there being pens out there worth hundreds of pounds with gold nibs etc etc etc, this for me, and has been for a large number of years my go-to pen. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Have only ever cleaned it or flushed it when changing inks and then only with water, other than that it just gets to stay inked.Lyra Art Pens contains high quality fibre tip art pens in a selection of brilliant, lightfast water-based colours. The Lyra Art Pen is a superb, artist quality tool for allcolouring techniques, artistic drawing and sketches. I did find that broken lines were a little more challenging draw because the ink flowed so readily but again, this is something to get used to rather than a fault with the pen. I like both, the DP-1000AN has crisp lines but a slightly scratchy nib and the Rotring has wider lines but a very smooth nib.
