About this deal

Rereading the book in a mother-daughter bookclub, I was shocked at how moralistic and shallow it was–another case where my own imagination had supplied so much of the depth to the book, and in memory ascribed it to the actual book. I think it was seeing all those characters portrayed well on screen and enjoying their separate story lines that helped. Also great, not as good as 1 but loved the twist, Eric Matthews is a piece of shit, Tobin Bell rocks and this movie immediately showed me why people love him.

This film’s first big reveal comes earlier than you might expect, and the pace only accelerates from there, serving its tightly wound plot through elegantly understated cinematography and crisp dialogue that carefully unfurls the paths that brought these characters together. Movies also play to a larger common denominator than books, so more people will find a good movie interesting than would find the same book, like with North and South – unless you enjoy reading very descriptive, long, nineteenth century plots, then often the miniseries, although it is still long, will appeal to you more. This visually stunning and thought-provoking film stands as a testament to the enduring power of ideas and the intellectual legacy of the past. That being said, the following are movies that I enjoyed as much, but not necessarily more than the book.

Caligula" is a film that pushes the boundaries of mainstream cinema by combining historical drama with explicit content. Recently I have found another movie that I preferred over the book and that is Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks. I have only read a few of Nicholas Sparks books (and it’s been a number of years), but I have to admit that I think his books work better as movies.

Also I think Bridget Jones’s Diary, About A Boy, and High Fidelity were awesome both as books AND film. Synopsis: Centurion tells the story of a Roman centurion Quintus Dias who leads a small band of soldiers on a dangerous mission to rescue the wife of a Roman general. I don't quite get lumping this one in with Jigsaw - that movie really sucked and felt boring as shit, but this one was a fun and neat side-story.

Spiral looks like it is more a side story which I'd prefer over the derivative, pointless shit Jigsaw was, so maybe I'll like that? I think I would have liked the book better if Matt Damon had been in the book, and if there was less excruciating detail on growing potatoes and vehicle batteries …. V for Vendetta is also a brilliant movie, but it was based on comics so not sure if it counts for this list. If you want to delve into the reign of Caesar f

Not sure if it counts as a movie, but I prefer the BBC mini series version of Wives and Daughters to Gaskel’s novel. She has to fall in love with someone who is of the same economic status as her — or so the story goes.
