Its clean tasting malt almost single-handedly keeps alive the light Lowland style, for just three Lowland distilleries now remain, drawing its water from a source in the Lammermuir Hills, and ageing its spirit for 12 years in oak casks.Despite those delicate flavours though, the true character here is the gentle grist/malt, which plays its role as king surrounded by its many single malt flavour subjects. Tomatin 12 year old has first been matured in boubon casks, before being finished in Oloroso sherry casks for between 6 and 9 months. I purchased the Glenkinchie 12 year old lowland single malt, and I purchased it purely by the description, having never had it before, or even heard of it, but I am so glad I did purchase it. There’s a good grassy/hay-like dryness and smell to it too – very much like the straw-like colour of the whisky itself.

The palate brings stewed fruit, honey and touches of creamy lemon cheesecake are balanced by crisp apple, light grassy elements and cut flowers. Glenkinchie lies, as the name might suggest, in a glen of the Kinchie Burn near the village of Pencaitland, East Lothian.
