About this deal

Not to say that the Keepers Rulebook was confusing, but the style was a bit wordy (much like Lovecraft himself), while the Starter Set was a bit more concise. Finally, it has been translated in another ten languages in addition to English, something pretty much unheard of for any RPG. The fleeing character will try to alter what appears to be his unavoidable capture by maybe attacking, take actions like creating obstacles or picking locks, casting spells etc. If I ever find myself in a situation to run something other than a one-shot I’ll come back and revisit it. Review Summary: The stars are right for the best edition of the best role-playing game in the world.

I enjoyed the passive and active stances one can take while fighting (a very common occurrence when one simply tries to tire or outmaneuver an opponent and not actively hurt him, which wasn't as well emulated in the previous ruleset). But like there’s more than discrimination topics that can come up at a table that can be addressed in a session 0.The advantage of being backwards compatible can always be seen in a negative light as a lack of willingness to innovate.

But I liked the abundance of examples provided in the Keeper Rulebook as well as the appendix distillation of the key elements in one place at the end. There is colour everywhere and incredible imagery accompanies the text, no matter how the former tends to be more explicit and visceral than implicit and brooding. From my limited experience it’s less of a concern because every Keeper has really just sort of glossed over it. If you do know them, this book is a fantastic foundation to create truely terrifying horror sessions. Eliminating pluses or minuses on each roll and opting directly for half or one fifth skills and characteristics which are conveniently recorded in the record sheet puts the narrative back in the driving seat and smoothens the flow of the game.Within strange and forgotten tomes of lore you discover revelations that humanity was not meant to know. There are two scenarios included in the Keeper Rulebook, Amidst the Ancient Trees (17 pages) and Crimson Letters (20 pages).

Learning and casting spells is, as expected, an arduous affair, the latter always costing sanity points. Depending on whether it is a bonus or a penalty die, the higher or the lower of the two tens dice that are rolled will apply. In another novelty, just like in the characteristics before them, the half and fifth of each skill is recorded from the beginning on the record sheet for immediate reference in the case of harder rolls. If the Keeper manages to transmit all the information he has on the NPC protagonists to the players with good roleplaying alone and without exposition, the adventure will really shine. Tomes of Eldritch Lore describes dozens of Mythos and occult books that the characters are likely to stumble upon.Last there is a vast appendix that provides you with quick access to the important rules or frequently referenced details that the keeper can have at their fingertips. This book, the Keeper Rulebook, contains the core rules, background, guidance, spells, and monsters of the game. Just because it's branded "Keeper's Rulebook", it is NOT some sort of "Dungeon Master's Guide" equivalent, like I'd thought. Most likely (read: always) they will die from either physical injury or they will be driven utterly insane from the horrors they face. If one takes it to the extreme, one would suggest that it detracts from the game, changes its focus etc.
