a pawn fork that forces ei ther the king or queen onto f7, allo wing a devastating knight fork) 1 . A wonderful mix of various tactical motifs and a great assembly of exercises that really should be in every chess book collection. Taking your time with each exercise, rather than checking the solutions after a few minutes, to find the moves (and anticipating the opponent's response) is where the educational value comes in; some of them even took me a few hours to properly understand. If this celebrated observation is true for the master, how much more so for beginners and casual players!

It is here that we explain the ideas behind crucial tactical motifs such as double attack, the pin and skewer, as well as pawn promotion, drawing techniques, etc. Might be best to get a smaller, easier tactic book and this one to follow Even though i love the idea of 5334 puzzles, it might not be my first choice because of the randomness of the puzzles (and it is HUGE! This book certainly has some downsides for people who prefer puzzles to be mixed into one big pile with no help whatsoever, though almost a third of the book is dedicated to the "mixed motifs" sections. There is a comparatively challenging collection of mate-in-threes (81 positions) and mate-in-fours (23 positions), and a healthy chunk of "mixed motifs" puzzles. discovered check the movement of a piece un masks a check by a second piece double check the movement of a piece that checks the king u nmasks another check from a second piece double threat the most im portant single concept in tactics : a move by a single piece creates two problems simu ltaneously ( e .

I know purists (like me from 5 years ago) will say that you should set the positions up on a board and solve them, but I don't have that kind of time.

But it seemed appropriate to me to but them together since they're from the same author and about their tactical content seem to complete each other. Over the board, individual tactical motifs are often hidden in the complexity of the position, and a player must train his eye to recognise how a combination of tactical themes can be put tog ether to achieve his objective, be it mate or winning material. The book is a bit confussing since it stars with excercises like mate in one ,mate, in two, the missing piece and only then come the chapters about double attack, pin, decoy sacrifice etc. The diagrams have all been redrawn, which is good since it allows the ebook to flow, but unfortunately they have been redrawn using low resolution, blocky images. After halfheartedly considering a few possible other candidate moves, I had to give up because I hadn't the faintest idea what it could possibly be. In hindsight, I can see why it's a good move and can imagine the train of thought that could lead one to considering that move.
