The enculturated sludge of Euro-American scientific arrogance ruptured within me; its poison flowed out my eyes as a salted sea. This encounter with the water soon led me to realize that I had also been taught to refuse encounter with my illness, to keep a similar separation. Arts professionals, artists, critics and Buddhists were brought together to investigate the impact of Buddhist perspectives on artistic and museum practices in the US. The Gaia Theory, first proposed as a hypothesis by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis in the early 1970s, states that the Earth’s biosphere and upper crust acts in such a way as to create and maintain an environment for the propagation of life. The mainstream dictates that art itself is the primary theme, and ironic, self-aware surfaces are the method.

Animate Earth argues that we need to establish a right relationship with the planet as a living entity in which we are indissolubly embedded - and to which, in the final analysis, we are all accountable. In the morning I felt a clear shift in my bodymind toward more of a sense of ease as I listened for whether the larch and the forest had given their permission.

The lm goes on to provide an overview of the evolution of scientific thinking from the ancient Greeks to the Enlightenment, and explores the roots and inspiration for today’s holistic scientific thinking, especially in the theories of Goethe and Lovelock. Based on James Lovelock's Gaia theory, Harding argues for a new perspective and relationship with the earth. Featuring leading environmentalists, scientists and spiritual leaders, the film exited how an over-dominance . However Animate Earth is hard-Gaian in that it presents the Earth and its living processes through metaphor, in a way that brings us, viscerally, closer to the Earth, and living processes.

Animate Earth argues that we need to establish a right relationship with the planet as a living entity in which we are indissolubly embedded-and to which, in the final analysis, we are all accountable. An animate universe feels so right for me experientially and now, thanks to people like Dr Stephan Harding and films like Animate Earth, it computes intellectually too. Featuring leading scientists, ecologists and authors, Animate Earth makes the case for a new holistic scientific revolution as an essential step towards solving the environmental crises created in large part by conventional science’s mechanistic view of the earth.

A fear that we had installed a large artwork on top of brutalized land for the sake of some compelling photographs without the land’s consent gripped me. Gaia Theory proponents fall into two camps, the soft-Gaians who maintain that the Earth isn’t alive, but only appears to be. This is the place where I first felt the deep relation between body, illness, and earth, where my disability and ecological consciousness first emerged, joined at the roots. In Animate Earth Stephan Harding explores how Gaian science can help us to develop a sense of connectedness with the more-than-human world. The rolling tide that rushed from those opened floodgates flows directly into the story of Dream Puppet, and our encounter with a different brutalized ecology.
