alice sun, a high-achieving student at airington college, faces a tough decision when her family can't cover her remaining tuition fees. I just really felt Alice’s character and her feelings, the such strong wanting and how this drives her character.

Alice thinks her secret power helps her get enough money to pay her tuition and help out her family’s financial problems. But there was a scene with Alice’s aunt that made me think the aunt had personal knowledge of Alice’s superpower, like maybe invisibility or various superpowers ran in their family under certain circumstances.love love love how it beautifully woven into the story, never overpowering but rather subtly building up with a slow burn. my heart hurt so bad for her, especially when she starts really thinking about the “you’re still just a kid” comment from mr chen.

she got me rooting for her even through the kidnapping and the blackmails and every questionable decision that she's made. alice sun – as a former ib student and seeker of academic validation, she was a little too relatable. I didn’t mean this book is not enough thought provoking with strong messages like criticizing class differences, racism, inequality, poverty but the way of giving those messages was brilliant! I’m glad the reasoning behind the Beijing ghost app wasn’t for something trivial or actually full fledged greed, but to help out her parents. It’s a more one-sided rivalry, with Alice hating Henry for years without him really being aware of it.i would rather spend the rest of this train ride fighting with him than let him be alone with his thoughts and fears again. Henry is one of these people; Alice perceives him as someone who has everything—essentially the opposite of her. Still, the two of them together just create chaos, or rather, Henry’s presence makes Alice blurt out things she shouldn’t say, which had me laughing so hard. I especially love that part about how The American Dream doesn’t necessarily have to happen in the US; Alice sounds like a character easy to root for!

manifesting a hot tall nerdy guy who has no play and only wants me”🙏 everywhere and it’s becoming a PERSONAL ATTACK!let me just take a moment to acknowledge that he's not only a fan of taylor swift but also incredibly kind to every single person he encounters. Alice is very determined to make something of herself so she doesn’t waste everything her parents have sacrificed. This book is set in a very exclusive school in Beijing, and Alice, the heroine, isn't going to be able to attend much longer even with her scholarship due to her family's dwindling funds. it's clear that a profound love and respect exist between them, creating a beautiful bond that resonates throughout the pages. We are blessed with Never Have I Ever type academic rivals to lovers (one sided hate >>>) and Rory Gilmore academic validation.

Between the gorgeous writing and the incredible class commentary and Henry Li, if I wasn't squealing into my pillow, I was near tears at feeling seen by the Chinese culture and diaspora experience woven throughout. this really isn’t that deep but i would like to point out that there are in fact schools with ib in america! There was little moments between them which I really enjoyed reading, but the only disappointing part was that I didn’t always feel connected to the characters, it did feel intermittent depending on the scene. Her anxiety and stubbornness make her human and real, and I liked being able to visually see her growth and change in her own mind along the way. i kind of wish that they gave an explanation as to why she does turn invisible but i do undersstand that it's a metaphor for finding yourself but IDC IDC ANN LIANG SUPREMACY.i love the way she integrates asian culture without it being stereotypical ughh i just love love love her. i had assumed it might have had some connection to the sun or some other intriguing concept, so it was quite disheartening. Alice Sun has always felt invisible at her elite Beijing international boarding school, where she’s the only scholarship student among China’s most rich and influential teens.
