Description
Their punishment is made harder by the fact that toxic spores from the melting permafrost have been released into the atmosphere; anyone spending time in that part of the world must take prophylactic pills at eight-hour intervals to stay alive. In the absolutely packed Act II, the dark fantasy resumes and the Sandman expands into the French Revolution, ancient Rome, 19th-century San Francisco, eighth-century Baghdad, and beyond. Sometimes terrifying, with heavy dollops of suspense this intricately layered novel reveals its secrets whilst maintaining a sense of impending doom. I loved the idea of it when I read the blurb, and ny reading pal told me to talk to her about it when I was finished as she’d recently read it. The ending is very ambiguous and I felt that the reader was invited to make up their own mind about it.
Wondering whether this is a hero story, how does one effectively define a hero – and can you be your own hero? But sheep can’t swim… As days pass, Aina begins to suspect that their prison is part of a peninsula, and that Whitney has been keeping secrets. As she comes to grips with the decisions that haunt her past, she realises her biggest choice is yet to come.
I found this a really fascinating book- we are presented with a couple trying to atone for a crime they are sure they did not commit, and are seemingly kept healthy by a single pill, taken exactly every 8 hours without fail, the timing of everything drilled into their subconscious. The descriptions of the landscape and Aina and Whitney’s relationship as it begins to break down are so well and subtly described.
The sudden appearance of a token sheep also throws things off kilter where, as readers, we are left pondering its significance. For me, the most meaningful advice comes from people you either love or respect, and ideally those who have read your work. They've kept busy – Aina with her garden, her jigsaw, her music; Whitney with his sculptures and maps – but something is not right. Taut, unsettling and so completely charged with both tension and emotion, I found myself captivated by Metronome … Its vivid characters and the bleak, brutal beauty of the world they inhabit will haunt my dreams for a long time now, in the absolute best of ways’ Naomi Ishiguro.
