Henry Thomas as Ed Flynn, Riley's father who works as a fisherman and is reluctant to welcome his son home. The actors filling out the series’ ensemble cast include Flanagan regular (and wife) Kate Siegel as Erin Greene, Henry Thomas as Ed Flynn, Rahul Kohli as Sheriff Hassan, Samantha Sloyan as Bev Keane, Annabeth Gish as Dr. Sarah Gunning, Kristin Lehman as Annie Flynn, Robert Longstreet as Joe Collie, Crystal Balint as Dolly, Michael Trucco as Wade, Annarah Cymone as Leeza, Rahul Abburi as Ali Hassan, and Matt Biedel as Sturge.

When it comes to the horror genre, religious subject matter, biblical imagery, and the thought-provoking details that can come with it have always fit quite well together. And, as Flanagan pointed out, the connection between religion and the gruesome and terrifying is not at all difficult to find.

I read to the end of the book because the plot had its hooks in me and I wanted to see how things would work out. With the benefit of hindsight, the knowledge wasn't worth the trauma - which means my experience pretty much mirrors that of the 'good guys' in the story. The typical Flanagan fare wraps poignant stories of family, community, and unremitting optimism around horror-filled centers. This combo has made him a perfect collaborator with Netflix, the home of most of Flanagan’s recent work. In all of the films and series he’s written for the network so far, Flanagan has created tales whose horror plots draw broad audiences and whose rosy themes appeal directly to middle America. Flanagan’s Netflix partnership has also given him an enormous audience; The Haunting of Hill House, arguably his most successful project, was one of the most-binged series of 2018. A small town on an island experiences miraculous events – and frightening omens – after the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest. The cast includes Kate Siegel, Henry Thomas, Zach Gilford, and Hamish Linklater. Midnight Mass' is one of those books that should come with multiple trigger warnings for torture, gang rape, sexual slavery, the murder of children, desecration, executed bodies hung from telegraph poles, and cannibalism. When it became clear that Father Paul could still do all of the horrible things I needed him to for the story while being a good person with a pure motive, then I felt like we had a show that was about something,” Flanagan said. There was also something about the Catholic church. I don’t know if this is true, but the author wrote that priests used to be allowed to marry and have children. But as a result priests would give their accumulated wealth to their families when they died instead of to the church. Therefore the church changed the rules not allowing priests to marry.

Success!

In this book, the hunters have their work cut out. The vampires have taken over the entire eastern hemisphere and are well into their assault on the New World. The mortal world needs a savior, and he is Father Joe, a priest with a past. He is helped by his niece an atheist lesbian martial artist, a killer nun, and Zev the cross-wearing rabbi. There is an uncomfortable subtext involving Jewish-Christian relations, what with the efficacy of the cross against vampires and the mass death of Jews who refused the pragmatic step of wearing a cross. Wilson is careful to say that the power of the cross symbol might pre-date Christianity. He also has a Jewish hero and Christian villians (One of the main vampires is a pedophile priest.), and Wilson's main villians, religion-wise, are people who break ethical rules as opposed to theological ones. If there's a theological standpoint in the novel, it's that religious divisions and intolerance are dangerous. Following His H.P. Lovecraft Movie, Suitable Flesh’s Director Is Working To Develop A Stephen King Adaptation The arrival of a charismatic young priest brings glorious miracles, ominous mysteries and renewed religious fervor to a dying town desperate to believe.

Series creator Mike Flanagan described Midnight Mass as a passion project, one that was "deeply personal" and dealt intimately with Flanagan's upbringing in the Catholic Church, and his eventual sobriety and atheism. [9] He conceived the idea first as a novel, then as a film script, then as a television series that he unsuccessfully pitched to various production companies (including its eventual distributor Netflix) in 2014. Flanagan and Kate Siegel then adapted Midnight Mass as a story within a story in their 2016 film Hush (2016), in which Midnight Mass is presented as the most popular book by Siegel's character, Maddie Young, with Flanagan then planting the Hush prop book bearing the Midnight Mass title as an Easter egg in his 2017 film Gerald's Game, as a means of "keeping the idea alive over the years". [10] Prior to the series' production, Flanagan created the critically acclaimed horror series The Haunting of Hill House for Netflix, which released in 2018, as well as its 2020 follow-up The Haunting of Bly Manor. Roots, Kimberly (July 1, 2019). "Haunting of Hill House Creators' Horror Series Midnight Mass Greenlit at Netflix". TVLine. Archived from the original on October 29, 2021 . Retrieved August 18, 2020.It’s a fair assessment to say we’ve not seen many Muslim sheriffs in modern-day entertainment. Rahul Kohli’s Sheriff Hassan is here to change that perspective. According to the Haunting of Bly Manor alum, it was the combination of two cultural polarities that really excited him to play the part. There is a requirement for deep listening, and attention,” Annabeth Gish said of the series. “I think there’s a real availability for understanding about what’s happening in our world right now. It’s very timely. So, I hope that people receive that. I think there’s something very special about this project.” These are not the romantic vampires of Interview with the Vampire or Twilight. That is shown very early in the book, but neither are these the drooling horrors of Nosferatu. Also, each "get" or generation of vampire is different from it's progenitor, a little less human.

Is all this really horror? Midnight Mass was certainly marketed as horror. And Flanagan loves to slowly weave tonal qualities like atmospheric dread into a soft cocoon of meditations on life, love, and the human experience. He typically seems more concerned with the latter than the former, however, and his work nearly always rejects the fundamental core of most modern horror: the paradoxically comforting assertion that all hope is lost. Is a Mike Flanagan horror film ever really a horror film? I think no.

The scene where he argues about religious texts in public schools has also been praised as an accurate reading of a Muslim perspective on Jesus. [32] [33] Kohli said in Michael Rosenbaum's podcast Inside of You that the role was his most difficult. Kohli is "not Muslim, not American, not a dad, and not forty," and thus had a hard time in the role. [34] Accolades [ edit ] Year Midnight Mass by F. Paul Wilson is a thrilling and suspenseful novel that explores the dark side of religion and faith. The story follows a group of survivors who are trying to resist a vampire invasion that is orchestrated by a fanatical priest and his followers. The novel is full of action, horror, and twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Wilson creates a vivid and terrifying world where vampires are not romanticized, but rather seen as ruthless predators who use religion as a tool to manipulate and enslave humans. The characters are well-developed and realistic, each with their own strengths and flaws. The novel also raises some interesting questions about morality, free will, and the nature of evil. Midnight Mass is a must-read for fans of horror and vampire fiction, as well as for anyone who enjoys a gripping and fast-paced story.
