On the way through Iraq following the River Tigris he gets to places I read about as a child, the ancient city of Ur and its famous ziggurat, Babylon and the astonishing minaret in Samarra which can be seen top right on the cover of the book. That doesn’t make them less impressive and the lower parts, certainly of the ziggurat, are genuinely thousands of years old so still worth a visit. Having listened to the all too brief audio book, I will have to lay hands on the ebook to see the photographs.

Iraq an endlessly fascinating nation blessed with ancient wonders and enriched with modern resources but scarred too often by conflicts. Michael Palin is brilliant and I’m so grateful to him for giving me the chance to imagine myself on this recent journey in Iraq. Dit boek was echt heel leuk geschreven, de vertaling was OK (wat kleine foutjes/zinnen die toch net niet lekker liepen), en ik zat er helemaal in, ik kon gewoon niet stoppen.

Daarna ging hij naar de Iraakse hoofdstad Bagdad, naar de Groene Zone die na de oorlog is ontstaan en ontdekte de geneugten van het leven in de bruisende oude stad voordat hij de beroemde Ziggurat van Ur bezocht. I haven’t seen that so not sure if there’s stuff here he couldn’t say on camera but was fun reading for an insight into Iraq today.

Hij volgde de loop van de Tigris van aan de grens met Turkije naar Basra, bijna aan de Perzische Golf. He has also made several much-acclaimed travel documentaries, his journeys taking him to the North and South Poles, the Sahara Desert, the Himalayas, Eastern Europe and Brazil.

Gegen Ende findet er noch einmal deutliche Worte, denn die Reise entlang des Tigris zeigt deutlich, wie sich der Lauf des Flusses und damit auch die Lebensumstände für seine Bewohner durch unser Zutun verändert haben.
