This step is much easier said than done, and was by far the hardest part of this DIY No Sew Easy Princess Leia costume. I admit I literally sweated a bit during this stage, until I realized that no one was going to see a slightly crooked or rumpled seam. This is where you really have to let your perfectionist instincts go. It doesn’t matter if the seam here gets a little messed up, so long as the sleeve is entirely attached. Please trust me: no one will notice!

This iconic costume is often associated with Princess Leia Organa; so if you want to dress like Princess Leia, make this gown. The costume has since become very controversial. Many consider it as a representation of the objectification of women in popular culture. Some others consider the outfit as a symbol of Leia’s strength and defiance in the face of adversity. Brave. Fearless. Friend of the Ewoks. In Return of the Jedi and the Forces of Destiny animated series, Princess Leia Organa is a leader who isn’t afraid to jump into action. Her Endor commando gear is a classic costume that can be made on the cheap in one day. You’ll be able to whip up this costume faster than an Ewok on a speeder bike! The rebellious Leia rose from an orphaned prisoner to a courageous space general and it is a beautiful and interesting journey. Poncho has 2 slit openings in the front at the natural body line to allow the belt to pass through the front of the poncho. There is at least another 8” / 20 cm of fabric from the slit to the edge of the poncho.

Princess Leia wears this suit throughout the film, from the time the Rebels arrive on Hoth to the time they escape the planet. She also wears it during the Battle of Hoth. The white vest is worn with high boots and braids wrapped around her head. Remember, this is not Project Runway. No one is judging your craftswomanship. They will be too busy admiring the fact that you made this costume out of a sheet, like some kind of modern day Maria from THE SOUND OF MUSIC. Poncho has a blotchy camouflage pattern, with no streaks or lines, and painted with large overlapping blotches of brown, light green, dark green, and cream or tan. This costume is often referenced and recognized as a significant part of Leia’s character arc in “Return of the Jedi”. It has become a symbol of her role as a strong and resilient leader within the Rebel Alliance. Step 2: Use tailor’s chalk to make an arc at the bottom corner (on the fold) and a larger arc from the bottom to the top of the fabric. (See picture.) Cut out both arcs. Repeat this step with your gold fabric lining. Pin the lining to the cape and trim the bottom of the gold fabric making it a few inches shorter than the blue fabric. Hem the bottoms of the lining and cape, if you’d like.I used an old queen size sheet that was earmarked for textile recycling at H&M anyway. Because of my height, I had to fold it diagonally to make sure it was long enough. I had no problem cutting the bottom corners off though so this was not an issue and saved me having to go out to buy a new piece of cloth. Note that you don’t need to line up the side edges perfectly since you’ll be cutting them off anyway! Cut out the head hole I mean look at how well my Tunic blends in. Those pesky Storm Troopers will never be able to find me. And if they do I know a cute Ewok who would be more than happy to help me out. Step 4: Place the strip onto the inflated beach ball. Smooth out any bumps or creases with your fingers or a paintbrush. Repeat this step until the entire beach ball is covered with a layer of strips. For the second layer, place the strips horizontally and for the third layer, place the strips vertically. Alternating the direction of the strips will make the paper mache structure sturdier.

Step 4: For the collar, cut out 2 donut shapes. (I used a child’s circle skirt pattern as my guide.) This will give you 2 layers to the collar -- an upper and lower layer. Sew the two layers together at the outside of the circles. Now making making a poncho, that shouldn't be too hard, but of course as always with costuming there are some hidden complications.

I loved being Endor Leia, especially when you have the cutest little ewok. In case you have missed our family Halloween theme for our costumes this year we are doing Return of the Jedi . My boys were really excited and wondered if I was going to be Leia when she visits Jabba the Hut. As in Slave Leia. Not really my style. I told them I was going to be Endor Leia. I have already been the traditional Leia and I wanted to switch it up. This gown is very similar to the Classic Leia that she wears in ‘A New Hope’. However, she wears a single bun with it. This gown differs from the classic Leia gown in that, it is made of a heavier fabric (Cotton sateen). It also has a shorter collar and less wider sleeves. This white gown is prominently featured during her appearance on the planet Tatooine, where she is held captive by Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire. This gown has since become one of the most recognizable and memorable costumes in the Star Wars saga.

Step 1: Measure your child’s waist and add a couple extra inches for seam allowance. Draw a cummerbund shape onto a piece of paper. Use it as your pattern to cut out the cummerbund from the pleather fabric. You can create the center rectangular detail with just a piece of pleather itself or by covering a piece of craft foam with the pleather fabric (which will make it sturdier). Add details with acrylic paint or fabric maker. Hot glue the rectangular detail onto the belt. Then hand-sew or hot glue velcro to the ends of the belt. When I made my Endor commando and Rebel Briefing Leia my plan was of course to also make the full Leia Endor battle outfit, the only thing missing after all was the poncho. Well that was almost two years ago now, but I've finally made the poncho, or at least the fabric start. It also helped that I have around 20 meters of a sturdy cotton that I need to get into more managable piecec, it's the table cloth from my sister's wedding.Princess Leia, the iconic character from Star Wars is such a strong character that many women want to be like her – and sometimes the least one can do is try to emulate her clothes. Step 8: For the straps, have your child wear the costume and then measure and cut the appropriate strap length. Attach the ribbon straps to the inside of the costume with hot glue or staples. This is the gold-colored metal bikini Leia wore while imprisoned by Jabba the Hutt in “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.”. It is also called the Slave Leia Costume. The metal bikini is worn with a braid.
